Ah, yes - I stand corrected.

I get those mid-2000s multi disc DVD sets confused all the time.

 

Yup - I'm almost positive that he and Charlie switched roles during Billy's songs, with Charlie taking over on percussion and Ollie at the kit.

 

Is that sequence online? LOVE to hear it, thanks.

 

I would still rather they played it before their set.

 

Well for me it never went into Outta Space!

 

Sometimes we "Can't see the time flashing by" to quote fron Tumbling Dice!

 

That's the price you pay if you have someone who at the time was a big star with several hit singles under his belt, and you want them to play backup

 

Except that he had earlier charting singles and didn't play in the middle of their set during the 1973 tour. Outta Space (1971), Will It Go Round In Circles (1973) and Space Race (1973 ) were all released before the 1973 tour. Nothing From Nothing (1974) was released before the 1975 tour.

 

The backing track is definitely not any of the other Rolling Stones.

 

I'm sure Billy having a mini-set in the middle of the show was a condition of his joining the tour. He was probably aware of the huge boast it was for Stevie Wonder's career when he not only opened for the Stones in '72, but most nights him and his band joined together with the Stones to perform a closing medley of "Uptight" and "Satisfaction". (too bad footage of THAT was not included in "Ladies and Gentlemen The Rolling Stones" !)

 

It's also possible that giving Billy a solo spot in the show was partly the band's decision, to give Mick a bit of a breather (He didn't leave the stage entirely, but he also didn't have to sing or "be Mick Jagger" for 10 minutes, which was probably nice). The Keith mini-sets didn't become a thing until the Steel Wheels tour, and the '75 shows were the longest sets the Stones had ever played up to that point, so I think it may have been a thing that was mutually beneficial to both Billy and the Stones.

 

I am sure he negotiated it as well. My point was most of his hits had already been released before the 1973 tour so it wasn't exactly when he was a hot property in 1975-76.

 

Jagger is more than capable of programming a raw beat to record a couple guitars and some bass to sing and blow harp over. Probably all him at that point.

 

But at that time he was considered a "musician's musician"- having played with Beatles (as a group and solo, especially a memorable turn at The Convert for Bangladesh), Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, of course The Stones, as well as having a bunch of solo hits (and wasn't one of his songs used as the theme to American Bandstand for several years ?)....Billy Preston was practically a legend at that time

The single, a sequel to his 1972 hit, "Outa-Space", reached number one on the R&B chart for one week and number four on the Pop Singles chart.[1] It also became a gold record. The instrumental proved popular enough that the musical variety show American Bandstand used it as the song for its mid-broadcast break from the mid-1970s until the show completed its run in 1989.[2] The song can also be heard in a party scene in the 1979 film When a Stranger Calls.

I should have added more, but I was trying to be nice. He was basically a Beatle fan, threadcrapping a Stone's fan. When will the nonsense ever end?

 

The Stones released the Blue and Lonesome album in 2017, topped the charts around the world and won a Grammy. Not sure what the point of this post is.
