I would say the essence of James Bond was captured in Goldfinger.

What’s your definitive James Bond film ?

I’d say my prefence and quintessential Bond film is From Russia With Love. Not too many gadgets, a great fight scene on the train and a good story to boot. Robert Shaw was an excellent and believable villain.

Bond on the up at this early stage.

Honourable mentions to Goldfinger and O.H.M.S.S too.

There may be better Bond films, especially to Bond fanatics, but Goldfinger established the formula and is the reason that the franchise exploded in popularity and is still going today.

My two personal favorites are From Russia With Love and On Her Majesty's Secret Service, but for the public at large, it's Goldfinger.

Goldfinger. Gadgets not over the top.
Hotties, but one of them was a butt kicker.
Great villain and still one of the most deadly second in commands.
Sean doesn't overdo the wise cracks.

“No Mr.Bond I expect you to die”
Charles Bronson would have made a good oddjob.

Best 60's - Goldfinger - tight plot, makes logical sense, great cast and stella soundtrack.

Best 70's - The Spy Who Loved Me - Barbara Bach, great theme song, completely OTT silly but done well, Barbara Bach, Moore not looking too old yet

Best Modern - Casino Royale - fantastic reboot, Eva Green, I think maybe the best bond film of all time. Captures the essesnce and is well directed and written.

The best one, IMO, by far. Atypical in plot and emotional arc — and, therefore, not definitive in terms of the rest of the series.

Okay, that's a valid point. Out of the more traditionally-done Bond movies, I shall choose Goldfinger, then.

(though I really have a soft spot for Moonraker, but that has also got little to do with the other movies' styles)

Gotta go with Goldfinger. From the fly-by opening over the Fontainebleau to (spoiler alert!) the bomb being defused with 007 seconds left, it's a super fun sixties sexy spy ride.

Let's hope no one ever attempts to do a remake.
