I would call it a drama with some moments of absurd comedy.
The way it closes for me says a lot and that IMO is real tight drama

Disagree. The film is a straight up black comedy that incorporates elements of Film Noir.

  7. As is Fight Club, but most people miss that.

The Wedding Singer is good, though more "sweet" than funny.

    Absolutely agree:cheers:

Another movie we watched where I was laughing my ass off but my wife didn't get what was so funny was Network, some of the finest satire I have ever seen. And still relevant 42 years later...

Two of the best comedic performances ever in film. Reilly especially. "Step Brothers" has so many classic quotable lines, I'm laughing just thinking about them. But definitely a movie that's better the more you watch it.

John C. Reilly is a genius - if not just for Dr. Steve Brule alone.

Think about it; 99% of the time, when you see him in a movie, no matter the character, you go "that's John C. Reilly." He's just one of those actors, like The Rock, where you can't separate the character from the actor. With Dr. Steve Brule, he disappears ENTIRELY into that character, and you almost forget it's a character.

I saw it at the theater as a kid because it was a Steve Martin movie, but didn’t really get it, as I had no point of reference for all that 40s noir. I was just sort of dumbfounded.

I think you mean he drisappears entirely into that crharacter, and you almost frorget it's a crharacter. :D

That is razor sharp satire. So rare that they could walk that fine line so flawlessly

We were teenagers at the time. (I will admit with great embarrassment now that we laughed when the name 'Edith Head' was on screen.) We didn't really know who the people were, as you said. But some of them were iconic enough that we knew they were famous. And I do remember wondering, 'Surely they should be old by now?'

Nonetheless, we enjoyed it. Of course I only really appreciated it years later, but we liked it despite completely missing the main joke. Steve Martin carried it for us.

Entertaining...but I didn't laugh even once. "Three Kings" was a funnier George Clooney vehicle (even if Ice Cube had all the best lines).
