Thank you for that Steve, how did you find the sound on the supposed US mono lp in comparison?

Curious here Steve, did your home go to a stereo cart/system in 65'/66' and from there on you only purchased stereo lp's as mono was petered out?

Exactly. That London 45 kicks. The album (comp) Decca versions I have are nice stereo but "polite" and clean. If you can say that about that track. Which I happen to love. But cranking the 45 on my system the other day was a revelation. Gut socking 60's rock. The Stones at their best.

It's funny, I am starting to do what I never thought I would do, acquire and accumulate a stack of 45's.
Because the sound is so much better than on the albums.

Good for it, I have more 7" singles than lp's of my favourite act and I have loads of their lp's.

Depends on the song. Often the 45 is overmodulated and distorted.

In the case of Paint It Black, the issue is mono vs fold-down, not 45 vs LP.

N.b. Steve was comparing the sound of the US mono 45' to the US stereo Aftermath LP cut.
    But your point is correct.

The original post was about the 45 vs the mono LP:

My oversight as I believe in a later post (8 before this one) he said he never owned the LP in that format.

That distortion I hear on the vocals, is that on the tape?

I'm not sure what distortion you're speaking of, but I don't hear any on the digital releases.

Steve, thanks for indulging us here.

I recently purchased your mastering of Cannonball Adderly's and Bill Evans' "Know What I Mean?" on DCC, and I think it might be the best thing you've done. I paid a lot of money for it, and once I heard it, I quickly forgot about the cost.

What are your top 3 or 4 favorite DCC (or non-DCC) CD masterings of classic rock material from the late 60s-70s?

  20. I was thinking that, but I forgot to note it on the lp, like I did on the other PP issues you mastered for them.(Love the Chet Baker and Crew!)

I compared an original, your version on PP and the new MOFI One-Step last night and even though the One Step is at 45rpm, and yours at 33 1/3, yours sounded the best on my system with my ears, last night.

Vocal focused and more clear, and you nailed the guitar tone and bite. The One Step had a wider soundstage but lacked the clarity.

@Steve Hoffman were you able to use the original LP mix of Jackson Browne’s “Running on Empty” for the Legends (Crank It Up) SACD?

Yes. Wonderful sounding, isn't it? Added no EQ, all just like it was mixed.

With The Golden Age Of Underground Radio vol 1&2(DCC) being done.

My understanding is the widows(or family) have tapes of even more of Tom D. & BMR.

Would there be the consideration to do (let's say ) some more volumes/new project (on another label obviously) with songs/DJ banter/commercials relevant to each other as you did with the Vol 1 & 2 with DCC?

    Maybe a KPPC volume?

The thought of those "tapes" with Tom D. & BMR sitting somewhere and over time "deteriorating" would be such a shame if they weren't converted to Digital ever?

  24. Would & could you be so kind as to post a Discogs link to the London 45 you speak of? I am a huge fan of 45's & would love to score a MONO of 'Paint It Black'
