I don't know if this trick still works, but I just called and talked to a salesperson and they credited me the 15% off coupon even though the website would not for me.
FWIW: I'm loving the ability to just mount various cartridges I have into their own head-shells and to swap-them in and out in less than 5 minutes. Plus the ability to adjust the VTA with just a twist of the base is pretty awesome too. The biggest inconvenience with changing a cartridge for me is getting back behind my preamp to insert/remove an MC transformer into or out-of the chain.
Going back to the 'Wobble' issue. I initially thought it was just the dots, but I've taken a video to check the up and down play and it's definitely not what I would expect from a precision premium product. I also compared it to my SL1210 Mk2 and that is better. Since the 1210 MK2's were about 1/6th of the price.... Check it out The turntable is level level. I have tried reseating the platter but that makes no difference. The spindle has no movement, so I would say either the platter is warped, or where it sits on the main body is out
Yes, this looks bad. Unfortunately, this much warping will negatively influence the sound, exactly like a warped record, significantly increasing the wow-effect.
Has anybody bought from Value Electronics? They stock the rare 1200GR. I heard they were a big Technics dealer.
Yes. Robert Zohn is the owner and I dealt directly with him, great guy. I believe he may be one of the top, if not #1, dealer/seller for technics so he is highly regarded and gets priority on stock and allocation. I was able to get in on the first shipment of GR’s in the US and have been super happy ever since.
The G/AE platter is balanced. How could a balancing procedure pass a warp? It has to be something else. I would re-check the 3 rotor shafts where the screws go in. Read "Fitting the turntable" here Fitting The Turntable; Fitting The Turntable Mat; Attaching The Head Shell; Attaching The Balance Weight - Technics SL-1200G Operating Instructions Manual [Page 13]
I would be very unhappy with this if it were me. I'd take it back to your dealer. That is simply not acceptable on a turntable which is that expensive.
I agree. There is no doubt it is mounted correctly. I've tried remounting several times and aligning the three different shafts to different holes.
Ok, got my combination square and painstakingly checked it in various places and found an area with a deviation. I can easily slide an A4 piece of paper under it Picture 1 - Technics Platter Gap1 It does look more pronounced in this one. I think the above picture is more accurate. Picture 2 - Technics Platter Gap2
Confusing...There's the platter and there's the brass plate on top of it. Can they be both warped at the same place and why/how? I'd place a sticker where the deviation is and follow the rotation to see if the "drop" occurs at the same place.
