I've been doing my homework around here on the delightful Ella Fitzgerald Cole Porter Songbook, but I'm still a bit confused. Dismissing the option of finding an original worth having, it seems I am down to three choices:

    1) Our Hosts DCC set.

    2) The Speakers Corner box

    3) The newer Analog Spark set.

So, if you could have only one, to listen to, which would it be? Why is a bonus answer.

Get the old Dennis Drake CD's on Verve from the middle 1980s. A dollar each. You're done.

And if they're more than a dollar each then they're still very much worth it!
And while you're at it, also get the other Songbook titles mastered by Dennis Drake, you won't be disappointed.

    Hi Steve.
I can't help but be a little surprised at your response. In your fantastic thread on this album, you said something to the effect that they were well done, and better then the later reissues, but you were less impressed after hearing the master tapes.

Did you have a change of heart on the Drake remasters?

Ella is definitely my favorite female singer, and Cole Porter my favorite composer, so this is one that I don't mind getting right.

    Thanks!
    Erik

Coincidentally, I stumbled upon volume one of the Rodgers and Hart songbook on Saturday. I may have overpaid though as it was $2.99. :)

Of course, my cd player decides to act up now. Perfect timing as always.

    Thanks for the recommendation.

Well, maybe I'll get all three.

Negotiating for the Speakers Corner one right now.

Charlie Parker plays Porter, or Ella does Harold Arlen would come before upgrading Ella/Porter for me, YMMV. Diminishing returns...but this is the wrong forum for that. I like our host's suggestion.

I bought them all last year for about $25 including postage. Incredible bargain. Incredible music. Thanks to Mr Hoffman and this forum for educating me about these treasures.

I did just get a very nice original copy of the Arlen Songbook. Which I've been enjoying a lot.

Maybe someone can set me straight here. My understanding from reading the forum has been that his DCC was pretty dramatically better then the Verves, if also dramatically more expensive. Have I misunderstood?

You have not. Steve's recommendation here, was the best inexpensive good sounding option most here can buy. The DCC is still best for CD buyers.

And which is the best for record lovers? And is that better then the DCC?

For record lovers, Analog Spark is best. Or find you an original Verve orange label first mastering (before the re-mastered version)

So i actually got all four and did a comparison. Equipment was very revealing, so both formats got a fair shake.

Far and away, the winner was the DCC CD. So much so that it was a total game changer for me as far as my understanding of what CD can do. I never would have believed that a CD could so comprehensively beaten two very high quality modern vinyl pressings. But there ya go.
