Which Audiophile Magazine Would You Recommend?

Simple question. Stereophile or Absolute Sound? Or add any other magazine you think is relevant.
I get both.

 

The New Yorker or The Atlantic Monthly. SHF has more than enough information and opinion relating to stereo or music!

Funny, my first reaction reading the first post was to remember that I have been considering a subscription to one or both of them. More than enough information? Maybe, but I’m into it.

 

I actually just subscribed to both, and fell for the impulse offer for Sound & Vision, as well as the New Yorker. I already get the Atlantic. This thread just made some publishers a tiny bit of scratch.

I didn't renew my subscription to The Absolute Sound when HP left. That was in 2012.

As much as I have bashed reviews and reviewers around here I still enjoy reading the magazines but I don't take them very seriously.

 

Positive Feedback

 

Neither magazine has much to say about room design and helping the hobbyist set up their kit.
It is mostly a bunch of hype and advertising masquerading as tests and reviews.
Herb is a pretty good read at Sfile.
Sometimes Robert Harley at A.S.
But I miss Sam Tellig and the old days when it was about the hobby---and you felt a sense of community.
Haven't subscribed in years and the forums there on line are not too good either.
Thank goodness for SHF!

I personally like Hifi-advice.com but I tend to read whatever catches my eye from that site Stereophile and Absolute Sound included.

 

I’ve recently resubscribed to Stereophile after a lapse of several years and I’m enjoying it, although too often with gritted teeth and painful eye rolling. I’m curious what, if anything, the new editor, Jim Austin, is going to do with the magazine and that’s likely to determine whether I re-up. John Atkinson’s measurements and Fremer’s vinyl-gear coverage add real value to the hi-fi conversation, but there continue to be various insanities such as a ridiculous preponderance of incredibly expensive big-iron “reference” components and the maddening log rolling for MQA.

I subscribed to TAS for a number of years but in the end the fanatical pure subjectivism and luxe porn for the 1%, absent the hypnotic psychodrama of Harry Pearson’s Sea Cliff dispatches, drove me away.

 

I've always subscribed to the notion (at least partly) that the last thing this magazine industry wants is for you to be happy with your gear. It's bad for business.

To quote a famous movie line- "We're all puppets in the same sick play."

 

In this day and age, don't think any are necessary - with forums, videos, and online access to most reviews, you can get more broad and robust information than any one single publication can provide. Lots of options online for whatever you need. Also, a lot depends more on the individual reviewer than the publication they are writing for.

 

I subscribed to both for years and years but they really seem like there both just selling equipment now.
If your just looking to keep up with whats new, equipment wise, then the'll both do that but otherwise it's just same old jargan.

 

Sound and Vision is worthless unless you run out of toilet paper.

 

Agreed that SHF is cat's meow vs. these magazines. I appreciate their mission and niche and the heart and effort that goes into a magazine. But for me - and many others I think - the features on megabucks stuff that I could never afford were superfluous yet often dominant. The most I have ever spent on a piece of equipment was $1000 for used Yamaha AS-2000. More often I am looking at stuff for a few hundred dollars and most often used. $500 does not get much these days in new turntables, amps, etc. Reviews of stuff up to 1.5 K may be useful for me but not 5k, 10k, 20k, etc. not. To each their own. I did like the record reviews and reasonably priced accessory reviews are helpful.

 

Hifi critic, subscription only, not inexpensive, no ads, just content, cover to cover reading.

 

I just started up with stereophile subscription because you can get it for $12 a year on Amazon now.

Stereophile has been my default fave for years.

 

My full impulse subscription spree mentioned previously altogether cost me less than I have spent on some LPs. I think the print magazine industry may be struggling to keep enough subscribers to actually sell ads? Haha

 

In today's day & age, magazines in general, audio mags in particular, are a dying breed. It would probably be a full-time job to keep up with all the audio sites currently available online. The younger audiophile will never know what it was like back in the pocket-digest sized days of TAS and Sterophile. Especially when CD's 1st hit the market, it was an audiophile explosion the likes of which I don't see happening again. Ever. Between the imported English mags and the American stuff there was quite a few to choose from. In bookstores, the magazine sections would have an 'Audio' section! Those days are surely gone forever.
