There have been a few Smiths threads 'n' polls of late but nothing I see to rank your top ten favourite songs.

In one of those threads @John54 wrote that "Sweet And Tender Hooligan" was in his top six.

Well I wonder, can we all choose our top tens? It would be like an album in it's own right.

In my choices set out below, you can see that I do like my Smiths dreary and dirgey!

    1. "I Know It's Over" from The Queen Is Dead
    2. "Well I Wonder" from Meat Is Murder
    3. "Sweet And Tender Hooligan" from Louder Than Bombs
    4. "Back To The Old House" from What Difference Does It Make (single)
    5. "Reel Around The Fountain" from The Smiths
    6. "This Night Has Opened My Eyes" from Hatful Of Hollow
    7. "Wonderful Woman" from This Charming Man (New York) single
    8. "I Don't Owe You Anything" from The Smiths
    9. "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" from The Queen Is Dead
    10. "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" from Strangeways Here We Come

    * Unloveable, Stretch Out And Wait and The Headmaster Ritual unlucky not to make the cut.

I've given out a couple of 'likes' already!

Well would you look at that - "I Know It's Over" in at number eight (see above).

Usually I am laughed at with disdain (like the kid who had to do PE in his undies because he forgot his kit) for choosing this song.

But it's my favourite Smiths song overall and I am unanimous in that!

My Smiths top 10, in no particular order:

    1. A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours
    2. Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
    3. Girl Afraid
    4. The Headmaster Ritual
    5. Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before
    6. This Charming Man (BBC/Hatful of Hollow version)
    7. Half a Person
    8. Sheila Take a Bow
    9. Nowhere Fast
    10. This Night Has Opened My Eyes

(Edit: This is really hard to do, since 10 isn't enough to include "Shoplifters," "Well I Wonder," "There Is a Light...," "The Queen Is Dead," etc.)

Two mentions of "Oscillate Wildly" - which I like as well. And just one mention of "How Soon Is Now?" :faint:

Don't you think the Peel version of Reel Around The Fountain is far far better than the version on the debut album? Far more intimate and emotional and natural sounding, and doesn't have the annoying piano backing.

The Smiths are very much a singles band to me. (That's also because I can't take Morrissey's persona in the context of an entire album.)

    Anyway, top 10:

    10. This Charming Man
    9. Bigmouth Strikes Again
    8. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
    7. Panic
    6. Ask
    5. Girlfriend In A Coma
    4. Half A Person
    3. What Difference Does It Make?

This Charming Man always lead the pack for me when it comes to songs by The Smiths.

If I had to pick just 10 maybe:

    This Charming Man
    William, It Was Really Nothing
    How Soon Is Now?
    Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
The Boy with the Thorn in His Side
    Ask
    Cemetery Gates
    Hand in Glove
    Rusholme Ruffians
    The Queen Is Dead

(He doesn't know me guys!) :agree:

Anyhow good God no, it's probably one of the worst Smiths alternative versions I have ever heard.

The studio version is SUBLIME perfection.

The one on Hatful Of Hollow has about as much intimacy and soul as a dead slug.

Never heard of it, Guv, honest.

Apparently it is a cover version of a song by The Cookies who I've never heard of either - this really does take the biscuit.

I find myself singing along with 'Girlfriend In A Coma' and 'Panic' way too much.
That probably means that they have what one might call "enduring pop melodies".
