If you're looking for strictly hits from his golden era, then this covers it very well. There's another single disc compilation called "The Ultimate Collection" which includes post Monument recordings, such as "Ride Away", "You Got It" and "Handle With Care".

I picked up a used MoFi pressing of The All Time Greatest Hits Of Roy Orbison. It's really all I need. If you want to start somewhere, stream or get the DVD of Black and White Night.

If you can get the original issue of this one, it’s impeccable as well!

Was Mystery Girl ever released on vinyl? Talk about a strong comeback! I used to have California Blue on 12" vinyl as a single, but I've never seen the full album.

there is also a 3cd comp that breaks his stuff into category as follows

    roy does country
    roy does rockabilly
roy does rock ( or perhaps ballads? )

( or something like this )

    highly recommend it.

that and agree with whoever mentioned mystery girl. his last major label full solo release on virgin.

it is stellar, from start to finish.

This is what the original two album vinyl set looked like (above photo is the CD re-issue). This is the perfect starting-point, if you can find it. All tracks are stereo.

*Beware of In Dreams: The Greatest Hits. They are re-recordings from 1986-87, although he still does a decent job. Start with the original recordings though.

I bought Mystery Girl on LP the day it was released back in 1989. Still have it.

I disagree. You are still missing recordings from his Sun Records period including the rockabilly classic "Ooby Dooby" and his post-Monument era on the MGM label which garnered a few minor hits like "Goodnight", "(Say) You're My Girl", "Ride Away", "Breakin' Up Is Breakin' My Heart" and "Twinkle Toes" -- all Top 40 hits. Don't forget Volume One by The Traveling Wilburys either!

Nice comp from Rhino records. Reasonably priced sealed copies are available at discogs.

That's a good one too! Four prime Sun cuts, 18 of the 20 Monument cuts on the All-Time compilation and two MGM cuts. Probably a lot harder to find on vinyl than All-Time though, since there was only one pressing I believe. All-Time was in print on vinyl for many years.
