The Guardian | Is Apocalypse Now: Final Cut the best version we'll ever see? ‘Apocalypse Now: Final Cut’ Release Date Revealed for Both Theaters and 4K Blu-ray Perhaps the greatest film ever made, IMO. I was all of 3 years old when it was released in 1979. And I missed seeing 'Redux' in theaters in 2001. I won't make that same mistake again. Can. Not. Wait.
Oh God, my poor wife. I will be trying to drag her to see this. "You have this on DVD, you know half the dialogue by heart. You need to see this WHY?" Warren Zevon; "It's a movie with two hours of cool effects and dialogue, capped by an appearance by Don Rickles"
I understand that the Time magazine bit is also cut, which was the only additional bit in Redux that was worthwhile IMHO. Thus, for me, the original theatrical cut is still the definitive one.
Agreed. The Time magazine bit is good because it gives Brando something to do besides mumble cryptically.
I'm particularly a fan of the theatrical version that ends with the destruction of Kurtz's compound. I find it the most satisfying. I believe that was only shown in some of the early 70mm engagements in '79. The general release ends the normal way, it's fine too. I just love Coppola's first instinct more.
The one thing I'll say for FFC is that even though he has revisited his films, he has always respected his own youthful judgement and kept the theatrical versions available. Also, his changes have only been in the form of editing and pacing; not adding digital glop. And again, the original general release version remains in print.
Why not? wouldn’t it be cool to see Willard have a machine gun battle with Kurtz? Also, the boat could spread wings and fly off the water. Action packed!
Hmm, are they striking 35mm or 70mm blowups? I saw the Redux print in Philadelphia and I’m not a fan. I’d love to take my son to a film screening.
Probably my favorite war movie but still like the original the best. I will try to see it if possible.
I think he largely got it right the first time.Redux was an inter3sting variation but didn’t replace the original theatrical cut.
Pass. I thought the plantation scene was a complete crash and should have been left in the editing room. I'm glad I saw it once but that's all I need.
Maybe I'm old but that is not a good trailer for this film and I am not critical of trailers as a rule. The Vietnam war as opera? No. It trivialises so much. I may see it again but I have Redux(Which I like a lot) and I've seen the theatrical release about three times. But at the right venue I could be convinced.
I will try and see it on the biggest screen available in the NY metro area if it really does play in theaters again. It remains my all time favorite film.
