When it comes to music facts, and disagreements, especially those that are kinda 50/50. I have a lot of conversations, and when I have those music conversations in person, its easier to "cross-examine" each other. Two "experts" might disagree, sometimes even with facts concerning music topics. I also sometimes see others ask online (usually when the facts are in doubt) and I'd say a vast majority don't seem to remember the source, which is important, especially when we (mass) communicate. I know first impressions stay in the mind, as well as the sensationalist stuff, and I was just curious about all you other music fans.

Lots of different kind of "sources".

    Sources for CD transfers.

    Sources for factual information.

    Sources for upcoming releases.

    Sources for concert dates.

    Etc.

I'll give the most recent example. A friend of mine, a former DJ, knows his stuff as well as anyone. He mentioned something about John Lennon, and it seemed far off. I said, "Where did you hear that from? Whats your source?" and he (and many I converse with, both in person and online) never remember the source.

Really, your query is unclear. But I suppose you mean, when telling a friend about some piece of music trivia is it important to cite your sources?

If that's your question - for me it is not important. If I'm skeptical about something, I may tell the listener that I'm unsure of the veracity of the following statement so take it with a grain of truth. If I'm told something dubious, well then I might sneak into the bathroom to discretely search Google. No reason to hurt anyone's feelings - and I get no pleasure in publically shaming anyone.

Well, we get into some deep discussions, and see many times on here people disagree about facts. Authors do too. Heck, even members of a band. Jim Morrison for example. One member (John Densmore) says Jim was the guy in that horrible Oliver Stone movie, but Ray says its false. .. Let's say you read a story about The Doors in Rolling Stones tomorrow. If I see some bias, the first thing I want to know is the source.

But before you do that, do you remember the source? Sometimes I don't, and double-check.

Just like when I answer Jeopardy questions and my wife says, "where did you get that?" It just pops in or it doesn't.

You mean do we remember who gave us each musical data point in our brains?

I always had a good memory for music facts even before the net. But sourcing is easier to do with the internet. It supercedes all previous knowledge as long as you don't know that it's wrong. So I don't see any reason why I might need to remember sources. It never comes up for me anyway.

I bring this up because I see a lot of mistakes, and was probably influenced by making one of my own. I'm sure I've made a mistake, and spread bad information that led to more spreading bad information. I wonder how you all are conscientious over accuracy. Even the source itself. We've had print, audio, video, and now the internet.

I'd just say, don't assert anything as a fact fact in any context unless you know it's a fact.

Look up "know" and "fact" if there's any doubt.

Sit down and have a conversation with
a Historian one day. If one has never
queried as to what all that being a
Historian entails, one may just have their
    previous notions of what documentations
    are ratified and subsequently delineated

    as "facts" permanently altered.
