For those in the rest of the world that do not know, it is a tradition that `LONG AFTER TONIGHT IS ALL OVER......by `JIMMY RADCLIFFE` is always the last song to be played at a Northern Soul all-nighter in the UK, I have no idea why...it just is.
Can anyone tell me what the track is in the video posted by `PASTAFARIAN` (great name), above?

Northern Soul :sigh: I detest the term too. I appreciate the love for the R&B genre, but often the songs they are beloved, aren't all that good.

Plus the ravings about "Northern Soul" has seemed to make the prices for some truly so-so R&B songs and albums go through the roof.

It was a culture. The guys dressed up in their smartest mod gear and the women put on their most fetching outfits. It was like a cosplay event but sadly, for me, the music was rubbish. I can't fault people liking that timewarp kinda vibe though.

As an Englishman, reading this thread makes me laugh. The cultural context of Northern Soul is very important in understanding its appeal. Further, the music, the drugs, the clothes the dancing are all part of the scene. As is belonging to something. Or feeling part of something. It was also a forerunner to the ecstatic excess of the acid house/rave scene, even though the music is very different.
Some of those obscure soul tracks are gems. A lot are American but not all.

Wigan Casino is the club most have heard about or if lucky went to.
During the acid house era, a British artist called Baby Ford released a track called Poem for Wigan which gets to the heart of the matter. This is not a Northern Soul track but it does shed some light on things.

It is meaningful only in England. I am a Southerner. I live in a city called Bath. A lot of Americans have heard about it. They visit often. But, there is a massive amount of cultural diversity within such a small country like England. However, Northern Soul is very much a North of England and to a lesser degree Midlands phenomenon. It feels 'Northern' and it is cool for that. Hard to explain to somebody not familiar with the cultural contextualisation.
So as a Southerner it feels right (and I mean really right!) to call it Northern Soul. To the extent that it uses music from other geographical locations, primarily USA is irrelevant really. The point is the music and the feelings it generates. From that a whole sub-culture or alternative society is born.

In the US, we think of Southerners as knuckle-dragging, cousin-loving, trailer (caravan) trash. I understand that's what folks from southern England think of their Northerners...

Mostly average Motown and Stax rip offs made by faceless artists. Reserved strictly for a very small (and elitist and insular) niche.
    Otherwise, don't waste your time

Maybe it was long ago , but not now. I know they pay big bucks for those IMO mediocre 7"

And you can be both working class and elitist at the same time

C'mon. Yeah there are rich record collectors. Sometimes wise investors. That is different.
I agree that you can have inverted snobbery but no generally you are very wrong about that.

Good luck buying one of those 45s now, but...

It's been newly recorded, along with some other great songs, and the CD sounds GREAT: Tracked, Mixed, Engineered, and Produced by Mark Pinske, of Zappa fame.

The Northern Soul scene is alive and well and has spread it's wings done in the South of England for a while agree 100% with Somerset Scholar, it is a very important part of English youth culture not elitist at all, kids just wanting to dance and have fun, how some of the tracks got overlooked by record companies is a mystery to not only me but others too.

I love hearing what others dig up and think is good. This trend is pretty much what a lot of us are out for. Just stuff that was ignored that might be great. Hearing what the UK thinks is cool is fun. I've got a few comps of this stuff. And they are great. Northern soul and Mojo Magazine both give me a different perspective on some cool old stuff. Love finding some new to me gems.
