Does that tonearm appear to be original?

Definitely, the arm is horrible and original. I had that TT in the 80's but with an SME arm, as I've said I don't remember the model. It used to be well reviewed.

    Underselling?!
"arm it was designed with that chassis"
When you can take a whatever arm that was NOT designed with a specific chassis in mind. Then the chassis and a arm has not much synergistic cheering properties..
Otherwise there should not be a market for lose tone arms. :agree:
And of course it works. But how well is another question. :)
But with that said I have no opinion on either and that could be a working tone arm as you pointed out. :righton:

It's most definitely a AR XA and with a little elbow grease and a few tweaks here and there it can be a great turntable!'

I've own a few of them and they can sound awesome when fixed up.

Two of the arms of that era are notably and often panned are this AR arm and the Thorens Kugel arm. I found they both performed admirably with Shure cartridges like the M91ed.

That was my first real turntable in the era 1969-70 with a small receiver and bookshelf speakers. I was in high school. A few years later, I started fooling around with various equipment and started to treat the equipment thing as a hobby unto itself. That's when the real madness began....
PS: As far as I know, that was the grandaddy of suspension tables, and all that followed, including the Linn, owed something to that original design. Yes, the arm was kludgey, but it worked fine with the normal ellipticals of the time. We've come a long way in terms of stylus shapes and set up, but for a cartridge like those standard issue Shures it worked just fine and sounded good- set up wasn't quite as critical either (though obviously made a difference).

The arm is not "horrible," it's actually well-engineered and very lithe, and it can be substantially upgraded with jeweled bearings, which are available.
