True. Nowadays we just all hate the meteopolitan elite.

There's an interesting northern soul record digging story posted at another site that mentions this record.

It don't think it's that deep? I just don't like the term, love the music--but I think "Northern Soul" often confuses the issue and gives a lot of s0-so songs too much praise and maks their prices skyrocket on the market.

One of the tracks that stood out(for me) on the 100 Northern Soul songs 5cd comp.

Man, I think that track is downright fabulous!

It's funny, whenever my wife and I play that track loudly through the stereo, we always end up grooving around and approximating our own versions of some of those Wigan Casino dance moves! And I usually end up with a back injury!

I think that's what I love so much about the Northern Soul scene -- the complete unbridled joy expressed by these slick-footed dancers out on these manic dancefloors.

Man, those nights looked like a hell of a good time!

I'm a long-time soul music collector and first became aware of Northern Soul through an article in a UK based rock encyclopedia back in 1979. After about 2000 or so I started picking up Northern Soul CD compilations and the songs definitely overlapped with my musical interests.

The music subculture that I liked best was the Low Rider oldies culture, which I first heard on the XPRS radio station in 1979. Some of those songs do overlap with Northern Soul.

I have the All Nighter northern soul collection just released recently on vinyl through Sainsburys. Tracks selected by Bob Stanley of Saint Etienne, who has very fine taste indeed. This compilation gets some heavy rotation. One of my favourite records out of thousands!

A friend of mine - a well-known music writer originally from North Carolina - is currently nearing the end of an in-depth book about the history of Beach Music for a university press. Has done many extensive interviews with the key players who are stilll with us. We’ve talked a bit about the overlap of Beach Music and Northern Soul (I gave him a copy of the Odyssey box set). Can’t wait for him to finish it up.

Fair enough I wouldn't give a grand for it but I'm not hearing anything particularly dreadful.

Exactly. Northern Soul and Southern USA Beach Music are the same music. It's the same music created by more or less the same musicians played in two different regions of the world.

This is the stuff you'd hear coming from open air dance floors in the 1960's when Myrtle Beach, South Carolina was two segregated beaches. One for whites and one for Blacks. The Black beach was Atlantic Beach. My family and I spend quite a bit of time down there when I was a kid growing up in North Carolina.

Grant always makes sweeping generalizations about his personal likes and dislikes, then gets his back up when people don't agree with whatever he says. It's just who he is.

I think people should just like whatever the hell they want and they usually do. Why try to tell someone what they need to appreciate, when they may have their own personal relationship with whatever genre.

Never heard of southern beach music, is that a new term ? Was thinking Annette Funicello there.

LOL, no. This was strictly a vibe that was only happening on the beaches of North And South Carolina for the most part. It's not a trend that a lot of people know much about. You had to be there...

Here is a song that was done in the 60's that got played at the Carolina Beaches. It was written by a couple of my relatives in the little town of Kannapolis NC, where I grew up.

Don’t hear any similarities with foot stomping northern soul.

Every song doesn't sound the same, lol... It's just an example. Not an embodiment of every beach song ever written...

Another song that captured my attention on 5 cd comp was Billy Joe Royal ~Hearts Desire.
