What are some example's of an artist being a poor man's version of another artist.

Mine.. John Mellencamp is a poor man's version of Bruce Springsteen.

Even though I don't like either Springsteen nor Mellencamp, I don't see one as a poor man's version of another. I see them as similar class of different culture. One is more of a middle/poor midwest, and the other is middle/poor east coast. Maybe there is a bit of 'flyover country' bias? :).

Barclay James Harvest were apparently called a poor man's Moody Blues often enough that they wrote a song with that title.

Coldplay kinda started out as a poor man's U2.
Live was actually called "the poor man's R.E.M." in a music mag about the time of their first album but I forget which one but it was probably Spin or Rolling Stone.
There were too many to count "poor man's Ramones" throughout the years.

Only in the minds of those who were content to look at superficialities, as opposed to actually evaluating the most important thing: music and lyrics.

The early Donovan/Dylan similarities were limited to cap, acoustic guitar and harmonica.

The musical/thematic similarities were nearly non-existent. Donovan wrote exactly one "protest" song: "The War Drags On." (He recorded, but did not write, one other: "The Universal Soldier.") Dylan wrote no songs that traded in the themes of songs such as "Josie," "To Try for the Sun" or "Summer Day Reflection Song."

An interesting exercise would be to list Donovan and Dylan songs of the era to see which ones match up with one another. You wouldn't get very far.

Bruno Mars-------->James Brown/Michael Jackson(I do think that Bruno is talented though)

Every Post Mid 1990s EMO Band--------->The Smiths(I guess there is always a market for miserable teens though, and I like The Smiths).
