Urgh..... a tie between "Unicorn" and "Beard Of Stars". Today I go with "Unicorn".

I ended up getting all 4 of the Tony Visconti deluxe remasters (My People Were Fair..., Prophets Seers & Sages..., Unicorn & Beard of Stars). Lots of extras ( John Peel, etc) and almost uniformly improved sound...no I can't pick just one!!!

I like them all, but they got better as they went along to me. I have to be in the mood for the first two. Unicorn - Tanx is a near perfect run of Bolan albums for me.

Yeah, I'm in agreement with the assessment that Tanx is the final "perfect" Bolan record...

Tenement Lady is one of my favourite opening tracks of all time, all with plenty of others of course!

I must say I like Zinc Alloy... quite a lot. For me, that's the last truly good T. Rex album. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a decent sounding cd version.

I have gradually warmed to Zinc Alloy over the years, I now find it very enjoyable

I've found many reviews complaining about Gloria Jones' influence, but I really like those backing vocals.

I bought My People Were Fair... when it was first released in 1968. Standout tracks for me were "Child Star", "Chateau In Virginia Waters" and "Graceful Fat Sheba". I thought it was a nice little album.

But I left it at that.

A Beard Of Stars, as it's closest in sound to T. Rex.

And not only Bolan, you can hear Visconti getting more and more self assured with each album as well. "Unicorn" is his first great production job. By then he knew what he was doing.

Yes, Visconti's memoirs are really enlightening regarding that progression of sophistication & confidence over the course of his amazing run with Bolan----well worth reading!

Tough choice. I'd include the first "T. Rex" album as a contender as well.

The first two are exotically strange, Unicorn is exactly that: a rare (mythical) animal; but Beard Of Stars is perhaps the easiest and smoothest listen. So BOS...? All 5 Tyrannosaurus albums are my favorites.

Very hard, but Unicorn is so well-developed of the first three. I love the songs, sound and the arrangements. Took really shines on this one.

Of the first two, I prefer the second album, My People. Great songs.

I agree absolutely, is it not a Tyrannosaurus Rex album in all but name?

Absolutely fantastic production on Tanx. The guitars and drums on Rapids sound so good.

I say he was great up until the end. Maybe not perfect, but I love Zinc Alloy, Futuristic Dragon, and Dandy in the Underworld. Zip Gun is a bit weak, but still enjoyable. Many years ago I sold my vinyl copy of Futuristic Dragon because I must not have liked it much. Now I am scratching my head why? Jupiter Liar rocks! I love Tanx, but might prefer Zinc Alloy and Futuristic Dragon.

I like bits of all four of these records, but he didn't really take off for me until the next album T.Rex. I voted Beard of Stars, but now I need to listen to all four of these again.

I love the fresh simple open sound of 'T.Rex' and I agree that there are still elements of 'Tyrannosaurus Rex' there, but Marc called it T.Rex and that's good enough for me. It's transitional. Certainly not as strong as any of the Tyrannosaurus Rex albums but leading the way to Ride A White Swan.
