I'm unconvinced this would be a seen as a justification for leaving a body cut in half on the bridge but then again I don't know how much you had to pay.

    Haha, good one!

Well, I am not used to paying >10€ for half a pint. Where I come from a pint usually costs between 3 and 4€. But that's the way it is in most parts of Scandinavia.

    On topic:

I love "The Sopranos". About 20 years ago the 1st Season started on German television and I was hooked. Unfortunately the TV channel did not know what they where doing and pushed back the broadcasting time after midnight on a Saturday. Of course, only few people where watching and the TV channel decided to stop broadcasting after 2 or 3 seasons. I bought all the dvd box sets from the US back then.

We're up to season 5, with the last episode on Sunday and it's certainly been high octane and probably the equal of 1 and 3 BUT my memories not to be trusted too much.

This week I started watching Vikings, Outlander, and Once Upon a Time.
Last year I watched all seasons of Sons Of Anarchy, The Sopranos, and Pretty Little Liars.
I have also watched Seasons 1-8 of Supernatural, Seasons 1-2 of True Blood, Seasons 1-2 of True Detective, and Seasons 1-3 of The Vampire Diaries.
I only watched 1 season of these shows: Mad Men, Dexter, Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, Californication, and The Walking Dead.

Ya know, call me crazy, but I think Fosse/Verdon is the best TV show I've seen in 2019. It's unlike anything else on television, it does a lot of very atypical things (like jumping back in forth in time 10-15-20 years), it's got a real unlikable anti-hero character in Bob Fosse -- and yet who is admirable in terms of the guy's talent and ambition, the show has spectacular musical numbers, but also gets really dark and dramatic, as with Fosse's heart attack(s) and ongoing drug/alcohol problems. I'm generally not a Broadway guy at all, but this show has really surprised me. It helps that the period costumes, sets, locations, plus the level of acting and scriptwriting is amazing. And it's one of the most striking-looking shows I've seen in a long time.

He does a good job in the part, but the real Bob Fosse wasn't half as good looking or charismatic as Roy Scheider -- that's a really idealized version of him. On the other hand, if you were going to make a movie about your life, wouldn't you want to hire somebody better-looking (and with more hair)? They make a great case in Fosse/Verdon about how sensitive Fosse is about his baldness, and that's one reason he often used hats in his choreography. I'm sure he would be very hurt by the show, but I think his faults make him very human. And his accomplishments are still legendary.

A big message of the show is, despite the Tony Awards, the Emmy Awards, the Oscar and the money, he was a miserable, neurotic guy. And no success can really make you happy -- especially a guy like this. It's a fascinating story.

Heard "Californication" was good. To be fair to Showtime, most shows get tapped out , good to end at the 5 or 6 year mark.
Some of top ones have- "The Sopranos", "Breaking Bad" , "Mad Men" went on one season too long, but way they broke it up was like an extended 6 .

I'm sticking with Endeavour as my choice. Solid.

  21. I'm going to see if I can go with just the cream of the crop, leaving out middling shows that I just "liked" (in no order, except that Breaking Bad is #1) :

    Breaking Bad
    Mad Men
    The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
    The Americans
    The Knick
    Boardwalk Empire
    Better Call Saul
    The Leftovers
    Fargo

.... Mindhunter was super great, but without a second season yet, it's kind of difficult to rate.

Fortunately, you can take that at any speed you want, it's not like you need all that existential angst at a bingeworthy pace. I like a good steak too, but not every Tuesday night. Ramp up your paranoia lavel in your own comfort zone.

I credit Sopranos and HBO with changing TV shows for the better. The 21st century would not have the quality shows we now enjoy without them. Therefore, with the exception of Mad Men (I think Weiner perfected his craft with Sopranos, and don't understand why HBO wouldn't sign Man Men) the top 6 of my list are reserved for HBO's stuff and everything else is in my opinion rather second-rate. I did think the relationship between Chuck and Jimmy in BCS was a stroke of genius, as was the concept of the anti-hero in Breaking Bad--the law abiding, hardworking dad who gets cancer and starts to unravel in interesting ways. But neither show was executed as it should have been.

    1. Sopranos
    2. Mad Men
    3. GoT
    4. Boardwalk Empire
    5. WestWorld
    6. The Wire
    7. Curb Your Enthusiasm
    8. Better Call Saul
