2001 is a long time ago now. You really haven’t seen a European film in the last 18 years that captured your imagination?

For me, the question is too broad. European cinema, along with Japanese cinema, is at least as important to me as what comes out of the United States, possibly more so.

So, rather than trot out your Bergmans and your Fassbinders (both of whom I love), I’ll simply mention my latest European BD purchase:

Wołyń (a.k.a. Volhynia, a.k.a. Hatred) is a Polish film from 2016, set during WWII. Powerful stuff.

Also it is in German with a German leading man.

Another one that I have just remembered, which fits into this hybrid category, Mexican director but filmed and set in Spain, The Devil's Backbone.

Wouldn’t say it was good, but it’s Dutch. :D
Looks like a TV movie, but I did see it in the cinema.

I have to say though that if this was a top ten list of films, euro films would not be dominating the list. But if we expanded the definition of euro films to include those directed by people born in Europe, it might be all euro.

I like Baaria and Gomorra is a gruelling masterpiece. Both a few years old now though.

Jules, the main protagonist, secretly records the Diva’s performance using a Nagra tape deck that he smuggled into the opera hall. That Nagra is featured prominently in several scenes. It’s the only tape deck in the movie.
