Which Zappa are you currently spinning?*

  1. That's what I've thought since the first time I saw the SATLTSADW album cover.

Hot Rats the other night. I am still learning a lot about Frank's music. I loved Hot Rats though. It reminded me of Todd Rundgren in a lot of spots and I am guessing Todd was an admirer of Frank's music, but I haven't explored that thought yet. It was still fun painting to Hot Rats, so that tells you something right there!!

That was my first album too and still my favourite! Such a fun, innocent and happy vibe to it.

It doesn't hurt having Captain Beefheart sing a tune!! Just bought from Wolfgang's this week by me: 2 different Wes Wilson Captain Beefheart posters from the magic era. I can't wait to get them framed!

There's a little bit of Zappa in some of Todd's early 70s stuff - A Wizard, Todd, TR's Utopia albums (TR's Utopia & Another Live) and a little bit in side 2 of Initiation. Not too much but it's definitely there.

Is the mix a lot different than the stereo mix on the 2012 cd?

One Size Fits All, during the Warriors game. Played it back in 5.1 via Dolby Pro Logic, the antique DPL1 no less.

    Zulch.

When I do good deeds like that, ex-girlfriends result.

    I never learn.

However, when it's necessary for me to pull the plug, I don't risk Zappa; it might fail.

King Crimson is what's guaranteed to send them running.

Maybe so, but she loves the classics. The only fault she has is that she listens to the local country station. But not while I'm in the car. No Top 40, no rap, just rock and roll and pop of the past. Beatles, Doors, Eagles/Henley, Zeppelin...yeah, I'm gonna marry her someday!

That said, we did "We're Only In It For the Money" this weekend.

Loving the heck out of Bongo Fury and Zoots Allures the past couple days.

Question for the Zappa experts out there. I am still fairly new to Zappa but have been consuming his albums in order of release over the past year or so. I am somewhat obsessive listening to each title repeatedly trying to fully absorb it before moving on to the next title. Several times, I have started back at the beginning again moving back up through his releases. I am up to but have not started Studio Tan yet. Should I listen through albums Studio Tan, Sleep Dirt, and Orchestral Favorites first or should I start with the 3 disc Lather release as I seem to have read somewhere that Lather is the way he intended to present this material? I could be mistaken about this though. Where should I go next on this quest?

I'd listen to the three separate albums. Although Studio Tan is represented in its entirety, the rest of Lather sounds too cut and paste to my ears. And the beautiful Flambe from Sleep Dirt is in truncated form. With Sleep Dirt restored to all instrumental since 2012, Lather is of lesser interest. You may want to listen to it eventually just for the original intended production which never was released at the time.

Sounds like good advice. I will start with those 3 albums. Thanks for the input!

Been on a Zappa kick since finding a pile of used titles this past week:

    Today:
    Sheik Yerbouti
    Tinsel Town Rebellion
    Freak Out (stereo)
