(LP Prestige Victor Japan "Prestige Jazz Masterpiece Series" SMJ-6560) 1977 .... recorded March 26th, 1958 .... John Coltrane (ts) + Red Garland (p)+ Paul Chambers (b) + Art Taylor (dr) .... over the years both Coltrane`s Quartet trilogy and his four Quintet recordings with Miles Davis for Prestige (aka Cookin'/Relaxin'/Workin'/Steamin') grew very dear to my heart ..... although it is obvious him being on the verge for a journey to different spheres these Prestige recordings stand alone are of sheer class .... stirring and indispensable ....

Wayne Shorter (ts) + Cedar Walton (p) + Bob Cranshaw (b) + Art Blakey (dr) .... stunning how evolved Wayne Shorter was - both as gifted composer and performer - at this rather early stage of his career .... and the superb rhythm section (Cedar Walton !!) is dealing .... probably Wayne Shorter`s strongest outing for Vee Jay ....

DOWN HERE ON THE GROUND - WES MONTGOMERY (Verve Originals/CTi/A&M) CD Bass – Ron Carter Cello – George Ricci Drums – Grady Tate Flute / Oboe – George Marge / Hubert Laws / Romeo Penque Guitar – Wes Montgomery Percussion – Bobby Rosengarden / Ray Barretto Piano – Herbie Hancock Vibraphone – Mike Mainieri Viola – Emanuel Vardi Violin – Gene Orloff / Raoul Poliakin Recorded 1967/68 and issued on A&M LP in 1968. The 2009 Verve Originals CD edition was digitally mastered by Kevin Reeves and issued in triple gate-fold digipak. Some nice tasty guitar pickin' here and there, but unfortunately not enough of it. There is some pleasant orchestration too. It's probably best listened to if you are in the mood for some tasty middle of the road/easy listening muzak. I can't help thinking that the hand to head photo of Wes is an indicator of his feelings about the Down On The Ground sessions.
