Here are the shipping rates HMV Japan likely applies for the Americas:

Rate Schedule(EMS: Second Zone) - Japan Post

I wonder how much a box set of 75 CDs actually weighs. Some 10 lbs?

They have some very interesting titles and items that are no longer available in the West.

Hi guys, I am in Tokyo right now and I just saw today the "Legendary Soviet Recordings" box set at about 100 USD.

    Does someone here has it?
    How is the sound?
    Do you recommend it?

    Thank you in advance

I have it and I thoroughly recommend it. They are mostly broadcasts from Russian radio during the Soviet era. No problems at all with sound quality and some terrific performers: eg. Richter, Gilels, Kondrashin, Kremer, Oistrakh, Rostropovich etc. This set introduced me to the wonderful conducting style of Evgeny Svetlanov. As well as many fine versions of works by familiar composers it includes works by some great Russian composers that I was less familiar with such as Myaskovsky and Glazunov. There are 100 CDS, so at $100 it is a great deal. I ordered it last year to be shipped to the UK by Amazon.jp

I wholeheartedly recommend it. A wealth of great Soviet era performers and performances in generally good to excellent sound. BTW-I was in Tokyo in April-wonderful city!

As far as I can see it's only listed on JPC Germany (110 euros plus shipping) and Amazon Italy (103 euros plus change and shipping) so far, not yet on any other Amazon site.

Oh yes, Tokyo is wonderful indeed. Sometimes crowded and overwhelming, but unique and wonderful.
An amazing thing is to go to Tower Records, especially the store in Shibuya and see all the boxes we salivate about together in a store, all of them and a few that I have never heard about. Most prices are high, higher that Amazon Europe or Ebay, but occasionally you find a bargain. I founf a few...

Ah, very nicely done! Creative and precise funny -- :tiphat:

Folks, are there other contenders for just the right word for the get-there-someday boxes that are responsible for a lot of our guilty pleasure? DEVA is setting the bar pretty high, but this Coinage Contest is still open!

I went today, it feels unreal that a place so peaceful is in the middle of Tokyo, so close to Shibuya crossing and Harajuku and you cannot hear the city.. and those magnificent trees on the way to the shrine, fantastic!
After that I went to Tower Records and bought the "legendary Soviet Recordings" box, a perfect ending for a great day.
I will miss my daily night walks along Nakamise Dori towards the rented apartment... with sore feet but a happy heart.

My Ashkenazy Amazon.it order just shipped :)
$46 shipped to the US was a sweet deal -- 5 Euro discount or not (or not in my case, but still a great price!).

Have you by any chance seen copies of Furtwängler's Das Vermächtnis box set? Besides its many incredible beauties, Japan must be paradise for us CD lovers. 色々なCDボックスセットを買いたいですよ!

No I have not. I've seen many Furtwangler's CDs, but not that box. But to be quite sincere, since I am travelling with my family I was not able to devote a LOT of time searching for CDs, I had to balance activities for the four of us. My son loves chasing for CDs as much as I do, my daughter likes it too, but my wife doesn't. They were not a drag AT ALL, but being by myself would have been different.
Japan is an awesome country and it is indeed paradise for us CD lovers, as I told before , the amount of CDs that can only be found here is astounding, I have seen almost ALL the boxes we talk about here and some I have never heard about, but in general the prices are not good, sometimes double or three times the prices we pay at the different Amazons or Ebay. Brilliant classics boxes are VERY expensive, but sometimes you find some good prices, especially used (like new) at DiskUnion.
Now my bags are full and I don't have a clue where the things are (I am leaving tomorrow to LA and I will be there for one day), but upon my return to Miami I will let you know what I bought.

Tokyo is a great city in which to take long walks. We stayed in the Raponggi Hills section and I walked to Shibuya and back one day with my son - we were looking for a specialist film camera shop which we did find.

Well, I finally went ahead and ordered a few box sets from HMV.co.jp:

-Rudolf Serkin: The Complete Columbia Album Collection
    -Georg Philipp Telemann: Masterworks
    -Otto Klemperer: Concertos

Shipping to the U.S. came down to ¥7,900, or about 73USD, which is not unreasonable given the boxes amount to 111 discs. The out-of-print Rudolf Serkin box set in particular would have cost about as much from Western retailers as I paid for all three boxes including shipping, and supposedly I'll be getting a coupon for 30% of the order later on. HMV.co.jp can thus be recommended as a good last resource for boxes that have slipped our grasp otherwise.

Amazon AU has some great box set prices right now. I am Australian, so I have no idea what their postage overseas is like. There doesn't seem to be any central way to identify what is on sale other than just do some searches and look at the prices and recommendations on similar products, but I have now spent far too much money. I got Bach 333 for about AU$425 - that is about US$300 (about 70 US cents to the dollar). I also bought the Sony Bernstein remaster box for AU$125, the Arrau box for AU$140, and the Sony Abbado box for AU$55. I have restrained myself from buying the DG complete Bernstein box for AU$315.

Amazon AU won't ship to the USA. Regrettably too -- the prices are great but they're only for Aussies I believe :)

Looks like the English edition of Bach 333 is sold out at Amazon.de and Amazon.it

Can't say you miss out on much very often. The prices usually aren't that exciting.

We on the other hand are blocked from ordering from all the other Amazon sites except the US so I see a lot of tempting buys on the European Amazon sites I can't access.
