Man, kind of been struggling between whether this thread is needed or not. I sat up in the search bar looking at old punk and post-punk related stuff. And there's great conversations and topics about the genres and the artists that belong to them, but I failed to find a thread that had those stories, album/artist recommendations, sound quality questions on specific releases/re-releases and remasters, anywhere! It all just falls to the wayside. There's one for Jazz, Classical, Country, Heavy Metal and Hard Rock, but nothing for the Punks? What!?:cussing:! So I thought melding the two genres as well as their sub-genre counterparts (80s Hardcore, Darkwave, Coldwave Minimal wave etc.) I could make a grotesque abomination of a music thread that can be home to all of that. Conversation and all.

So whether its New York's CBGBs or London's Batcave or you're just seeking refuge from all the Beatles threads raining down hard on the Forum. Enjoy the rain from under this umbrella. Forecast shows its gonna rain Beatles for a long time...

    Here goes.

So, why are lumping the Post Punk with Punk together? In my mind there was '70s Punk. Then Punk basically split. Today's Punk is rooting toward Hardcore and Post Punk is more in the direction that Lydon went after he left the Pistols. In my mind the factions hold onto the original spirit of Punk, but they are entirely different approaches. For instance, I don't really see much cross discussion of a Talking Head fan with someone who listens to the Circle Jerks. Don't get me wrong someone who listens Hardcore often listen Post Punk because you don't always want to hear 30x songs that are a minute and half. But it just seems like you are expecting of the order that BeBop Jazz fanatics share interest in discussing chart arrangement that were used in the Big Band era. Just doesn't seem likely to me.

Hmm, I get what your saying, but that's kind of what I was going for. Under one flag. I get the the 70s punk being the seed and whatnot but I felt the post-punk stuff kind of was its own thing. Some of the stuff tagged "post punk" if I'm not mistaken can go back to the 70s too or at least was starting to turn the corner on becoming it. Felt like it was its own thing, had its own legs and all. On this thread I'm trying to attempt to sew those once conjoined twins back together with no anesthesia, might hurt I guess. :)

The first two Ultravox! albums were fantastic. They mixed the ambition and experimentalism of art-rock with the feral aggression of punk. Doctors of Madness (pre-punk?) tread a similar path.

Man, great energy/creativity with these guys, I haven't heard them before, there a good digital release to go for for those first two albums?

I just have the standard issue CDs, which sound fine to me. Although a couple of years ago they released a mini-box set called The Island Years comprised of the first three albums (the John Foxx era) and a disc of bonus cuts. The third Ultravox album, Systems of Romance, is great too, but takes things in a different direction as it presages the New Romantic era. https://www.amazon.com/Island-Years-Ultravox/dp/B01DX0EHTS

The original Island CDs (IMCD146 & IMCD147) sound better than the remasters IMO

Some folks here will probably disagree but I actually like the 2006 Universal/Island remasters for the first three albums. For the fourth album I have a CD on EMI from 2000. I would say at least the first four albums are essential. If you want to keep going through the Ure-era of the band, the 5th and 6th albums are also good. All these discs are still in print and not expensive either.

I agree that for some folks it might be too different threads of tastes and potentially not a lot of crossover with some people. I happen to like old punk rock, hardcore punk, and post-punk equally but I could be in the minority. Over the years, I have had a few friends that like one style and not the others. I think separate threads could be good, but then you have you things like the combined thread here for traditional hard rock and heavy metal. In general though, I think people on this board tend to gravitate toward band-specific threads over genre-specific threads.

Well, Ha! Ha! Ha! and the "Young Savage" single sounds like this at least, not to mention the alternate version of "Hiroshima Mon Amour" which is quite the cacophony compared to the smoother album version. The first album, Ultravox!, sounds more in the lineage of early Roxy Music to me, which you'd think would be down to Eno being the producer on it, but apparently - according to the band - Lillywhite did the lion's share of the work on the album.
Systems of Romance is a more "produced" sounding record in comparison to the first two, but it predates the New Romantics by a good couple of years. I'd argue that even though Billy Currie and Midge Ure worked on the Visage stuff, that Ultravox had nothing to do with the New Romantics in either incarnation. Nor did Japan.

Systems of Romance, the 3rd one, is even better. That’s where post punk really kicked off imo, along with Magazine and PIL and Wire

It really depends what band/album you're talking about. In the case of the remasters I mentioned, they are not "bricked".

There’s a nice little 4 CD box you can get with the 3 Studio albums plus a bonus CD of B sides, single edits, John PeeL sessions and the 2 songs they performed on the Old Grey Whistle Test

Yeah I hear ya, I've noticed. Just since I've been in both genres, I've never had them separated, called it messy or even lazy, but who knows, the thread might sail might sink, I didn't see any thread for either. I just wanted the music to have a platform, even if its a treasonous one and maybe get some exposure to something fresh.

Don't have this box set but I do have the John Foxx Virgin Years box, which I do recommend.

Looks like this box features tweaked versions of the 2006 remasters:

Here is a list I made awhile back on RYM.

    https://rateyourmusic.com/list/patient_ot/patient_ots_post_punk_list/

If you are just looking for new music to listen to, try RYM maybe. Take a look at the charts, lists, and reviews.

    https://rateyourmusic.com/genre/Post-Punk/

Over here you're more likely to get responses if you ask about a specific band/album, rather than general genre recommendations.

Awful cover, but this is a true lost classic. I think they were all about twelve when this was recorded :)

I don't feel that there were all that many "great" punk albums. It was more about singles. However, I think these were the very best:

Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks (but the four B-sides are also must-haves)
    Heartbreakers - L.A.M.F
The Clash - s/t (UK version is the real thing - the US conguration is richer)
Buzzcocks - Another Music In A Different Kitchen, Going Steady (the singles)
The Damned - Damned, Damned, Damned

    Moving along, evolving:
Siouxsie & The Banshees - The Scream
The Clash - Give 'Em Enough Rope, London Calling
    Ultravox! - s/t
The Only Ones - all three albums
Iggy Pop - The Idiot, Lust For life, New Values, Soldier
    The Undertones - Undertones
    Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures

Albums by Television, Patti Smith, Elvis Costello also, but I don't see them as archetypla punk or post-punk. Just great.

Heartbreakers the L.A.M.F album. Man, now that is a good one for sure! Could never find a good mix of it, but it is awesome

The Fall got this year 3 remasters/reissues of their albums by Cherry Red and hopefully more will follow. These are reissued in very nice packages of 2 and 3cd sets full with b-sides, Peel sessions and live tracks. The 3cd versions came housed in a clamshell boxset

Did some of you purchased these allready?
