I got an email today saying my PayPal account had a problem and would no longer be allowed to use it. I assumed it was a hoax, and ignored it. However, when I logged in today, it had the notice again.

The email said after a review of my account, they found potential risk associated with it, and my "business" was inconsistent with their user agreement. I sell vinyl records - not sure what kind of risk they are talking about. I checked their user agreement and I do nothing in violation of it.

I called them and spoke with someone, and she will be calling me back in a couple of hours. I have to say I am kind of freaking out about this now...

Has anyone else gotten a message like this?

Weird, everything's normal in my little part of the Paypal world.

Sorry to hear that Chris :( Is the account "disabled" or "frozen"? What I have seen is this happens whenever there is a "spike" in the amount of money being received in your account - you might have sold a lot recently and receiving money from a lot of different folks within and outside US as well which triggered this event. This could also happen if someone has lodged any complaint against your "business".

I've heard of this and even know someone to whom it happened. When the volume of incoming transactions is high, it gets red-flagged. After a while, you'll get a message like this. In the case of my friend, they actually canceled his account and banned him from using their services.

My guess (purely a guess) is they want people to pay them for using their business plans. Nevertheless, I find their approach rather strange.

    Keep us updated, Chris!

Frozen, I guess. The notice said I could no longer use PayPal and that they were holding my funds for 180 days. Very strange...

I have sold a lot recently - maybe that's it? I believe I already have their business account - I sort of remember years ago them telling me I had to do the switch.

I haven't heard back yet, so still no idea what it could be...

Maybe it's something to do with anti-money-laundering regulations they are forced to apply when a lot of money is coming in and they have to start an inquiry. Just a guess. Not saying you're involved in any way, by the way.

Just got off the phone with them. My account has been restored - it was all a mistake. Very strange, but I'm just glad to have it back!

I was able to draw down my funds, so they really did restore it. No idea what happened, but the guy I spoke with was very nice and very helpful.

Possibly, but when I say a "lot of sales", I mean no more than $1,000 in the past month. I assume if someone was going to launder money they would be looking for more than that. But who knows?

Occasionally, the seemingly arbitrary acts that PayPal, eBay and Amazon pull on their customers are just baffling to me. I'm glad you didn't go down a months-long rabbit hole with your account.
