Yeah, of course -- but it's not clear what OP means by "competitive bands." It would be clearer if he/she had said "what bands was Lennon competitive with?"

I recall him being on a radio interview around 1974 and really having high praise for
    Elton John “Your Song”
Ann Peebles “I Can’t Stand The Rain”
Steely Dan “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number”

Lol, I was just having fun because of all the people who say music is not a competition.
    If you're successful it is.

What? The music business isn’t competitive?

He liked at least some of The Kinks’ material.

-He had ‘See My Friends’ on his personal jukebox.

-Their is also the famous story of him constantly playing ‘Wonderboy’ for at least a couple of moments during 1968.

Whilst it isn’t John, I know Paul was impressed with The Easybeats.

-The story is that while he was driving around, he heard either ‘Good Times’ or ‘St. Louis’ on the radio (various versions of the story exist) and “flipped his wig” immediately asking the radio station to play it again.

You didn’t say anything about the music business in you post. Music isn’t a competition, it’s art. Art is not a competition.

Lots of artists treat it that way, sadly, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s not a competition.

You couldn’t have picked a worse artist to back up your argument, too...competing with his contemporaries was never Lennon’s thing. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have recorded with the ones he admired most.

He didn’t admire his competition...he admired his colleagues.

I'm sure early Lennon was competitive.
Or instead of the toppermost of the poppermost The Beatles were going to play for drinks at clubs.

You’re sure? I’m sure that you’re not sure.

But I do like the playing for drinks part!

ELO and 10cc were "the sons of The Beatles", musically, in John's estimation.
"Like A Rolling Stone" and "Rainy Day Women #12 and 35" were on John's mind during January 1969 (the former when busking "Dig It" and the latter when recording "I've Got A Feeling"): "I Want You" was also busked and I think this may have inspired John's song "I Want You (She's So Heavy)".

O'course Chuck Berry was one of John's eternal favourites, too.

Are you kidding? Lennon was insanely competitive, as were all of them, at least until they made it.

Quote from him: You have to be a bastard to make it. That's a fact. And the Beatles were the biggest bastards on Earth.

Proof: They fired Pete Best because he wasn't good enough. Just the first totally ruthless move they made to make it big.

Did he actually say that? Seems like "She's So Heavy" is Beatles doing Vanilla Fudge.

Yeah, I remember him being quoted at the time, "it may be a new morning for him, but not for me."

I remember a interview where John mentions that he likes what he’s heard of Neil Young. Could of been in Lennon Remembers.

It reminds me of their hit "You keep me hanging on" and their demented LP "The beat goes on". Was Paul doing a Tim Bogert in his bass playing on that track - where else did he ever play like that? :)

Didn't John like the Captain Beefheart, Safe As Milk album but then later the song Beatle Bones and Smokin Stones with the reference to Strawberry Fields Forever was off-putting to him?

Per Don McLean, Lennon read a book on (Richard) Marx.

In my limited defense, I waited for some serious responses before posting this.
