I' ve bee reading some of the Dylan threads here and am enjoying them but there seems to be an absolute dearth of love for his great 1970 album New Morning.
There's plenty about Blood on the Tracks , the electric 60's albums , the Bootleg series etc but where oh where is the amour for the delightful New Morning?
I surely can't be alone in this wilderness.

Here's some love for "New Morning"
I got it for XMAS 1970 and it really grew on my young ears at the time. I was only 11, but a big Dylan fan as I was able to get a lot of his albums out of the library in those days and hear them in the entirety that way.

I love the two remixes on "Another Self Portrait" (New Morning and Sign On The Window) Makes you wonder what the whole album would have been like with even more input from Al Kooper.

However, it's great as it is and time has been kind to it.

I love New Morning. If Not For You is a classic that opens the record. George Harrison does it justice on All Things Must Pass. Day Of The Locust has a David Crosby reference in the line And The man standing next to me, his head was exploding. Good Weed. One More Weekend is an underrated bluesy jam. Great all around.

It makes a good case for Dylan being really great around this period.

It's funny, I'm not a big fan of Self Portrait or Dylan (although Spanish Is The Loving Tongue is great) but I have no problem with any of the post Blonde On Blonde albums. I don't really count the cover albums much anyhow.... Then everyone says the Blood On The Tracks is this big come-back album ... and I love Blood On the Tracks, and Maybe Desire even more, but John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyline, New Morning and Planet waves are all very good albums.

I provided comments on New Morning on previous threads re: this subject.
    To sum
    * the tracks sound like demos. Needed much more work to produce a finished track. Sounds like they just ran a couple of takes and said, “that’s it”. Judy Collins was able to produce a melody and memorable production of “Time Passes Slowly”. Bob and crew should have worked on this also.
    * production is too thin, guitars tinny, bass weak. No dynamics, no warmth. Shallow sound unlike previous lps.
    * “Two Angels”, “Father of Night”, “Dogs”, “Winterlude”, ‘Weekend” just seemed tossed off to fill the record. Several of these are quite lifeless.

More work, better production, development of the songs and melody needed. Some songs should have been scrapped.
    Plusses
Dylan is in fine voice, several good songs.

I love New Morning, yes. It's one of Dylan's most "listenable" records, as in even people who don't like him can enjoy it. Lots of strong melodies, and the songs are all short.

"Time Passes Slowly", "Day of the Locusts", and especially "Sign on the Window" need to be heard.

One reason this album is kind of different is that all (most of) the tunes were written on piano.

I love Dylan during this period. I remember going in to Self Portrait and Dylan for the first time kind of gritting my teeth, expecting them to be dreadful because that's what I had heard for years. But I find them charming and New Morning even better. A lovely, homespun record that appeals to the same part of me that thinks McCartney is Paul McCartney's best solo record. Loose, sweet and simple. Just plain good music.

Day of the Locusts and Sign on the Window are my favorites.

Is that a reference to David Crosby?

There are a few clunkers: Three Angels and Father of the Night and I prefer the Another Self Portrait version of If Dogs Run Free but the high points make up for it, in my opinion, and as others have pointed out there are other gems during this time period that can be slotted in on one's New Morning playlist.

    An underrated album, for sure.

I think it's a very good album. Not top 10, but feels somewhere between 15-20.

My favorite song is the title song.

  24. Add me to the list of New Morning fans, liked it as soon as I heard it upon release.

“Went To See the Gypsy” has always held a spell over me. Everlasting classic.
