I would swap the GD with 'Touch of Grey" .

Well, subject matter aside, The Pretender is a very slick album with some very LA slick production values, including the whole kick / tom/ hi hat thing that we teenagers noticed straight on as a disco rip.

Depends on which Sample and Hold mix. The vinyl LP version is Crazy Horse dominated with Ralph Molina’s decidedly behind the beat attempt at well, something.

That master was lost. By the time the CD came out, Sample and Hold was the drum machine-y disco-y mix from the 12” Different animal.

This teenager heard nothing of the sort.

Your not really saying there’s a disco track on a The Pretender, are you?

Nope. My OP said “disco influenced beats”. Also was a rejoinder to the same thought of disco influenced beats on One of These Nights.

Probably what we were hearing was then current LA studio arranging, engineering and production.

I retract this.. my brain skipped the 'disco' and focused on the sellout part. My least favorite GD song.. I thought I finally found an outlet lol.

I like the 'cover me' remixes. But that's because that's the only song from the album i like.

in reference to the bruce springsteen remixes, and they are nowhere near anything like disco.

to me, it's a total sell out, because they had a much more rock and punk sound to their earlier work.

it's no coincidence that this sound came out right around the time of disco, and that other singles
that came out later on had 'disco' and extended versions.

that doesn't diminish the songs, as i like the remixes, and prefer them to the album versions.

but they were aimed at that commercial type.

To quote the TV Show, "Pose", the category IS:.......

    1. Major Artist
    2. Disco song ( not just good beats etc.)
3 Hit ( it was released as a single and it charted high near the top.)

Bulk of this discussion thread is a major Fail.

Roxy Music’s Angel Eyes disco single remake.

For the record ( pardon the pun) it was a big seller in the U.K. u.s. not so much.

Sure, but the moderators don't like them because they invite bashing of artists and their fans, and entire genres of music. These threads also end up with people making personal attacks.

You know you just blew his world apart. Now he can never like the song again!

It does in some cases capture the moment when certain artists started following trends rather than setting them.

The Stones made some (imo ill-advised) attempts at playing Reggae as well before they went disco... I guess their version of 'Cherry-Oh Baby' on the 'Black and Blue' lp is one of the low points of their catalogue.

Beat me to it. I´ll raise you Beat the clock as well. In fact, the whole #1 in Heaven album from 1979 sounds like a precursor to any Pet Shop Boys album. Not a sell out though, IMO. I think it´s a terrific album.

Oh, and from the jazz field there´s Freddie Hubbard´s Splash album from 1981. I´m sure jazz purists will hate it, but I like it a lot.

Stephen Stills went full disco on his "Thoroughfare Gap" in 1978. I like this album a lot.

I think it makes sense to classify it as disco. It's got a stompy, four-on-the-floor feel, with chugging sixteenth note figures over it, etc.
