Damn, I should've mentioned these guys, too. Huge fan of Californication, By The Way and Stadium Arcadium.

I obviously should've created my own personal Top 30 (or Top 40) since Daft Punk is yet another act I wish I had mentioned in my original post.

Man 1980 was nearly 40 years ago. I agree with the OP's description of "the golden age", but that's a long time. Anyway, for rock, and assuming not including bands that were on my radar before 1980 that continued after that(in no order):

    The Replacements
    Alice in Chains
    Queens of the Stone Age
    Stone Temple Pilots
    Joan Osborne
    Soundgarden
    Pearl Jam
    The Church
    Sheryl Crow
    Nirvana
    Smashing Pumpkins
    Lucinda Williams
    Steve Earle
    Foo Fighters
    Eagles of Death Metal
    The Sundays
    Bryan Ferry (solo career)
Psychedelic Furs (didn't know about them until 80)
    Inxs
    Echo & the Bunnymen
    Gary Numan
    Monochrome Set
    Adam Ant
    The Go Go's

    For country:
    Patty Loveless
    Dwight Yoakam
    Marty Stuart
    Lee Ann Womack
    Travis Tritt
    Brad Paisley

London Calling was The Clash’s third album, their first was released in 1977, by no stretch of the imagination could they be considered an 80’s band!!
