Another 5/5, I know I'm giving a lot of these songs the highest ratings, but believe you me, the 5s will be few and far between in the coming weeks....

But I just love the slice-of-life stuff, and I love that the songs on this album just get so crazy. That "Baseball's On!" bit comes out of nowhere; it's as wholly bat**** crazy as the middle 8 in "Johnny Carson", you just don't expect it to keep doing what its doing, but it keeps on doing what it's doing! And the melody is just a feel-good jaunt.

It's trying to say - Lance has pretty much nailed this one. A Love You style LOL lyrical moment :

    "Those athletes work so hard
There's a pitch and the bat goes pow"

And what does the first verse have to do with baseball anyway? And the ascending "baseball's on" 's are another wacko moment ala "You ... you ... you ... you" in Had to Phone Ya. I was going to give this a 4/5 but Lance convinced me it's worthy of a 5/5.

It's Trying To Say - There's a good melody here but once again the lyrics just seem so random. Mike could have done something better with it. It's still a charming little song, though. And how the hell is this still in the vault? Only a generous 4/5 because, again, it's not "God Only Knows". Not by a long shot.

Baseball or whatever the hell its called.

There might have been some potential there with the background vocals but the lead by Dennis is just painful.

I always try to find something redeemable about BB tunes and I usually do, but c'mon guys, this is awful. Thank god it never saw the light of day. I like the slice of life thing about baseball but not this. Going with an overgenerous 2/5.

If you mean with these breakdowns of the albums, I'm enjoying reading them. Can't believe some of them are not rated higher.

Unlike lou, I was going to give "It's Trying to Say" a 5/5, 9/10 anyway - but nice to see these songs getting the ratings they deserve (when they're high ones). Ed, a 1? Really? That melody is better than that.

It doesn’t surprise me that we’re getting some polarization around the Adult Child tracks, just as we did on the Love You tracks. In some ways Adult Child is an extension and refinement of the Love You sonic and lyrical technique, with some big band arrangements thrown into the mix. If only Brian had been put in charge of the next album, M.I.U., instead of Alan and Ron and Mike. Who knows where the sound and songwriting might have gone instead of the retro approach of M.I.U.

I also like the drumming/percussion on this one, it's pretty cool!

It’s Trying To Say (Baseball) is another of those “only from the mind of Brian Wilson” songs. Sure the lyrics might not be great, but there are enough interesting and offbeat moments to make it worthwhile.

I’ll agree that most of the Adult/Child material is going to fall squarely in with Love You for listener’s opinions. Neither project has much commercial potential, but for Wilson fans it’s fascinating listening.

Dennis’ vocal is rough but he does carry a lot of soul and feeling in his singing. The “baseball’s on” section is certainly unexpected but pure quirky Brian.

I’m an avowed LOVE YOU fan so this is right up my alley. I give It’s Trying To Say 5/5 for Dennis’ vocal and Brian’s offbeat arrangement.

5/5 and Brian’s last masterpiece for at least a decade.

Oddly I prefer the piano demo.

    5. Best song on the album. His last really good song released under the Beach Boys' name until a few of the songs on TWGMTR

SIDOI: David Leaf wrote about this and “It’s Over Now” long before they came out on the GV box as examples of Brian still having his skills intact. Neither song was a disappoint when I finally heard them.

His voice may be rough and straining on the higher parts, but it’s the emotion that carries the song. The glimpse into Brian’s world at the time is quite sad. The Dick Reynolds arrangement is interesting and supports the composition well.
Certainly one of Brian’s best songs of the 70s.

    5/5
