What bands do you guys think went from an awesome album to one that was either ehh or horrible on their very next album released?

For example, Pink Floyd going from Final Cut to A momentary lapse of reason, grant it Final Cut was Waters' last album with the band but still no excuses. Also, Metallica going from ...And Justice For all to the Black Album. And if you like the black album then fine Metallica going from that to Load. And lastly, Elton John going from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road to Cariibou.

I know people will disagree with these that is fine. But give me your 2 cents on artists who went through transitions like this. And it doesnt have to be an album that was the beginning of the end for that band, it can also be an album inbetween 2 other great albums that you did not really enjoy.

I guess it depends on how we are defining fell off. The Final Cut is the last classic Floyd album for me, but Momentary Lapse is a great album.... Some folks don't like either.
I fell off Metallica after Justice, but the Black album was enormously successful, so it is difficult to suggest they fell off, they exploded, and a lot of their actual mega status, depends on the Black album.

I think with the Elvis seventies thread we're going through, that Elvis Now was a fall off.

I chose a bad title for this. I dont mean they fell off commercially. More that you yourself were turned off by an album that came right after a really great one.

Eagles, going from Hotel California to The Long Run. I Can't Tell You Why is an exception though.

    oh ok.
In that regard I totally agree... I can't even listen to Metallica these days, even the stuff I used to love ... and I'm not sure why... I didn't hate the Black album that much, it was just disappointing lol

The Psychedelic Furs - Mirror Moves to Midnight To Midnight
Husker Du - Flip Your Wig to Candy Apple Grey (I still love everything they did but, for me, it's a big step down and they never got back up)
The Who - Quadrophenia to The Who By Numbers
The Kinks - Lola to Muswell Hillbillies (I know Percy is in between but it wasn't a regular album)
Throwing Muses - The Real Ramona to Red Heaven
Sonic Youth - Dirty to Experimental, Jet Set, Trash & No Star
Dinosaur Jr - Green Mind to Where You Been
The Ramones - Too Tough To Die to Animal Boy
Kiss - Creatures Of The Night to Lick It Up to Animalize (LIU is half as good as COTN and Animalize is half as good as LIU, maybe even less)

Steve Winwood Back in the High Life ---->Roll With it.
Now, I know people here like Spencer Davis Group and Traffic, but I grew up in the 80s and Back in the High Life was all over the place. I worked my way backwards.
But Roll With it came out. The title song got played over and over again (It's okay today) but the rest of it really is terrible.

Most disappointing to me was Violent Femmes. Instant classic first LP, second LP even better, then... an occasional good song before it all dissolved in family fighting.

Pink floyd going from the wall to the final cut was the huge falling off.

Brain Salad Surgery to Works vol. 1.

    If you liked Works vol.1,
then the drop-off to vol.2 was also noticable.

I really liked it. Not just the title track but also “Holding On”, “What The Night Can Do”, and “Hearts On Fire” were highlights.

The Morning Side is gorgeous, no? Don't You Know What The Night Can Do also has its charms.

Half of it is filler, I agree. But it was huge in America. Like, incredibly huge.

Genesis- 'Wind & Wuthering' to 'And Then They Where Tripe'. Although the loss of Hackett can probably explain the dip.

Squeeze gas been discussed a few times on here as to its status in the VU catalogue - I may be corrected on this but majority opinion thought it didn't count as a VU album.

    (i) None of the original members play on it
(ii) It didn't get a US release.
(iii) It doesn't get a mention in the Peel Slowly box

Dan Fogelberg - Nether Lands to Twin Sons Of Different Mothers. Yeah I know Twin Sons wasn't strictly a DF album, but I don't remember being so disappointed by an album. If anyone insists, we can use Phoenix, another disappointment.
