Songs that made you sad , lyrics that made you cry...

" She ' s leavin' now because I just heard the slammin' of the door. The way I know I heard it slam one hundred times before.." -- ' Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town '

    Dylan' s ' North Country Blues '.
Seldom mentioned , seldom heard , totally depressing.
I was playing an acoustic compilation I made of his songs and my wife said this song made her think of a graveyard.
    Well done , Bob.

yea definitely, and also the astonishing Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll.
Time Are A Changing is one of my favourite Dylan albums, and the perfect album to listen to, for me, when a bit depressed.

Yes...depressing as that album can be it somehow manages to lift you up out of whatever downward spin you're in.

She's leaving me, left me, cheating on me songs don't really effect me on the level of songs about the atrocities of the world.

The first time I listened to Pink Floyd the Final Cut I was sat in silence for quite a long time after it. I know folks bag it these days, but that is one of the most emotionally disorienting albums ever made, to me

It matters not at all what others think about what affects you.

Affected me that way as well Mark. As whole, still probably one of my favorites :)

"For No One" is pretty devastating, possibly McCartney's greatest lyrics.

ABBA's entire "The Visitors" album is full of sad lyrics. Like this verse from "When All Is Said And Done":

It's so strange when you're down and lying on the floor
How you rise, shake your head, get up and ask for more
    Clear-headed and open-eyed
    With nothing left untried
Standing calmly at the crossroads, no desire to run
There's no hurry any more when all is said and done

The album was recorded at a time the band were really breaking apart. The two couples who made up ABBA had all been divorced prior to recording, the Cold War fear had invaded Sweden as well and it was audible that this was to be ABBA's final album. A very sad listen. The non-album singles "Under Attack" and "The Day Before You Came" are equally depressing.

Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton - so very sad, esp. knowing that writing this song was cathartic for him after losing his young son...

Alan Parsons Project: Old & Wise

Never heard the song before last year and I think you have to be of a certain age to really appreciate the sentiment. I’ve said before that if I had heard this as a kid when it first came out, it probably would have had no impact on me.

And to those I leave behind, I want you all to know
You've always shared my darkest hours
I'll miss you when I go

And oh, when I'm old and wise
Heavy words that tossed and blew me
Like autumn winds, will blow right through me
And someday in the mist of time

When they ask you if you knew me
Remember that you were a friend of mine

The strange thing is, while this is partially a sad song, it’s also a bit of joyful song... someone who is at peace with what’s coming.

    Oh, man..
That creeped me out back in '70 . It made me realize that , one day , my mother would be dead. She passed away a few years ago and a couple of years after that I was playing this album and that bit came on and creeped me out again.
    Well done , John.

ABBA gets slammed sometimes for being too pop but that album is excellent.

Their only album I can really listen to front to back. When I first heard it, I found it hard to believe that this was really an ABBA album. I mean, their songs always have a dark edge to them, but man, this album is some REALLY sinister stuff. No wonder it confused listeners in 1981. Their masterpiece imo.
