i also seem to find many aussie films to my liking. two films to search out from there are The Dish and Hunt For The Wilderpeople(thats actually from NZ). Hunt was directed by Taika Waititi, now in Marvel's stable.

I think I misspoke and "An Angel at my Table" is actually from NZ. Some of the Aus and NZ films are disappointly hard to find on streaming services or are just not available at all - I have no idea why.

I thought of a German movie made around 2004, called "The Edukators", pretty cool movie.

The one with Daniel Brühl and Burghart Klaußner? I believe I've seen that one, but I'm not sure. The plot summary reads very familiar to me.

This just made me think of Michael Haneke's "Caché". To me, this is his masterpiece, although opinions on the film extremely vary to this day. Oh yes, and Götz Spielmann's "Revanche" from 2008. Although I believe this was Oscar nominated, so it should - in theory - be quite known over in the US, too. The "Brenner series" consisting of "Komm, süsser Tod", "Silentium", "Der Knochenmann" and "Das ewige Leben" is brilliant, as well. Hilarious crime comedies, very dark in humor. Those are famous films here in austria, but I guess cultural and language barriers rendered an international release useless, probably making them not particularly well-known to most users on here.

I watched White Oleander at least 10 times and read the book. The protagonist Astrid actually reminded me of myself because I moved around so much when I was in college.

There are many firsts on the web :D :D

I caught that one during a "trash night" on ARTE, a french/german TV station. They broadcast Four Flies On Grey Velvet, a doc on seedy cinemas at train stations and this one. That sure was a fun evening :unhunh:

    Fiend Without A Face
    Quest For Fire
    1972's The Other
1992's Wuthering Heights...best out of all versions. Binoche and Fiennes make it real.
    1992's The Secret Garden

And I just saw yesterday on CometTV a portion of the beginning of an old B&W sci-fi flick that I always skipped over with the remote due to its corny title..."The Man From Planet X". Want to get the DVD of it because I want to see it fresh from start to finish instead of the many times I keep stumbling on it somewhere in the middle on cable TV.

Directed by Edgar G. Ulmer, who specialized in offbeat movies. It’s worth a look.

From the short bit I caught yesterday I could tell from the lighting, set design including the alien creature design and cinematography this was more than the title suggests. Meek and mild William Schallert plays a ruthless bad guy intellectual. Now there's your offbeat casting.

That's a LOT of movies I haven't seen! I've only seen Red Sorghum and I thought it was tremendous. If I ever upgrade my video system that is one of the first BD's I will purchase - has Criterion or a similar company done this one?

I have most of the films on DVD, a few are recorded from TV. Almost 20 years ago I started buying DVDs all over the world. I was always hunting for foreign movies and it was a lot of fun but also an expensive hobby. Now most of these films are easily available via streaming.

I have "Red Sorghum" on DVD but I don't know about the quality anymore. I will take a look later. There is a Chinese BluRay but it is said to have been limited to 800 copies...which does sound very low for the Chinese market:

Yes.. The movie opens with a rich family coming home with all their material goods in the fridge.

No, but I just read the tagline on imdb. Sounds very interesting. Thanks for mentioning the film!
    @Tim S
I found the DVD and it doesn't look bad but it is the Japanese disc and has no subtitles. I remembered, back then I did buy a few foreign DVDs and added subtitles from the Internet. The DVD cost 4800 Yen, which is 40€! I wouldn't spend that much money on a single movie anymore let alone without subtitles. Who'd have known that one day it would take a few seconds/minutes to stream/download films.

There is this cheap UK DVD mentioned by dvdbeaver and maybe one day it will become part of the Criterion Collection. There are so many movies out there worth seeing.

Only streaming available for Red Sorghum is Filmbox.

Amazon will rent it to you to stream for $1.99 - think I will do that, this is one I've wanted to rewatch several times, and it looks like no BR is coming - surely at some point that will be done.

The Other?? "I'm king of the mountain!I'm king of the mountain...."
Other then that I like "Pacific Vibrations", a 1970 surf movie that could never get released today because of music rights.
