I read that the iron maiden as a medieval torture device or whatever is a myth. It was actually something made-up to wow people at traveling sideshows. So its use by a metal band actually makes sense.
Woah now we are talking about one of my faves VDGG in this thread?!?! How cool is that! Saw them couple of times, intense stuff!
More or less, it's a rewrite of "El Paso," except the narrator more explicitly blames the woman for his troubles, he rides off to hide in Mexico rather than go back for her, and he shacks up with a 14 year-old girl. It did not surprise me to learn that this was Barlow's first attempt at writing a song.
saw the Jeff Beck/Santana bill mid September in Concord I don’t recall him saying anything except basically Jeff couldn’t get his head together and jam or something. Maybe that’s all I remember that and having my GD office tix for the Glen Helen shows for October

I had a miserable week at work, so had some GD therapy this weekend. Watched all of the Sunshine Daydream DVD last night - I had got through the worst parts of the week using visualisation of doing just this, or imagining being at the show 47 years ago (which of course I wasn't). Followed by View From The Vaults II RFK 06/14/1991. Fell asleep with headphones on listening again to the Veneta 1972 show on CD, woke up nine hours later (I usually get six-and-a-half hours sleep and make up the deficit on weekends) and pressed play for a third bite of the cherry. Moved on to March 1990 shows on speakers not headphones, Dozin' At The Knick and Wake Up To Find Out - Knickerbocker Arena and Nassau Coliseum, which is where I am now. Feeling restored and Grateful.
Which of the SBD's do you guys lean towards when there's an option? I've gone right for the Charlie Miller's, and they seem to be really good.
Currently enjoying Dark Star from the Fillmore ‘69 3 disc compilation. As I get older and time passes with increasing speed... I wonder why I listen to anything outside of the years ‘69, ‘72, ‘73, ‘77, ‘85.
All the recent talk about prog rock is fascinating because I think the Dead is one of the few bands that cut across so many different genres and bring fans in from far and wide. Im mostly a jazz dude, but I am completely allergic to prog rock. Even Zappa and King Crimson, who I listen to, are much more bands I appreciate than like, if you know what I mean. Anyone else into the Dead that doesn't listen to Yes, or ELP, or Tull or any of those bands at all? When I am listening to non-improvised music I prefer Isbell, Josh Ritter, or Ryan Adams way more.
He should have done the Costanza method and given up songwriting after that because he nailed it down perfectly. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was Kesey's first novel... Not to mention 1970!
Yeah I don't really listen to those bands. They're all bands I appreciated to one extent or another at some point, particularly when I was a teenager. I can dig King Crimson...
Pretty much the same for me. Zappa is the one I listen to more of the bands mentioned. But I'm not a really a fan per se. I don't know stuff and I certainly don't know the discography. But I enjoy them all from time to time. Some more some less
