Pretty much anything from Denis Villeneuve. Prisoners and Enemy are IMHO his best movies, these two are not only dark they are both fairly gripping.

I am not sure myself, maybe no happy ending? Like in real life. Not necessarily though. Those examples can give a clue.
    'Papillon' (original) is another one

The Night Of The Hunter (1955)...Robert Mitchum as a ex-con switchblade wielding psycho false prophet circa 1929 whose lust for money far outweighs his love of anything else...

Mitchum's performance as the ex-con makes his performance in the original Cape Fear seem like a stroll through the park...

Directed by Charles Laughton & the epitome of "dark" & unsettling

I don't mind some 'dark' movies.
This one made me churn however.
Probably wont be a regular screening.....if ever again.

Original theatrical release of Apocalypse Now... seen it over 70 times... not a fan of Redux...
River's Edge with incredible performances from Crispin Glover and Dennis Hopper. Even Keanu Reeves is tolerable.

Some off the top of my head. I too like my movies without a happy ending from time to time. It's quite refreshing.

Thanks. I watched some of them, not many. I am not talking about horror movies btw, something more or less realistic.
