Just watched Vanishing Point last night for the 1st time. Cool flick. I wish I wouldn't have waited so long to see it. I've had the dvd laying around for at least 8 years now. Finally got to it.

The Rain People is a good place to start (1969).

Right on the edge of your timeline. Released in 1980. Comes out on Blu-ray this week.

WARNING. THE VIDEO IS DEFINITELY NSFW. BECAUSE OF SOME NUDITY

Some nice shots of the cars too. ;)

Peckinpah’s film was shot in Cornwall, U.K., so doesn’t fit the OP’s criteria.

The 2011 remake was moved to small-town Mississippi, but it’s not a contemporary 1970s film, so, again, not what the OP is looking for.

A little off the beaten path and grade B but the feel for the early 70's is here. Kino Lorber were set to reissue on Bluray last year but pulled it.

Well, The Bad News Bears was filmed in LA County, but it certainly doesn't have a big city feel. And what could be more American than Little League Baseball and drunks.

I actually remember some interesting cars in Deep Throat, including an early fifties Chevy that had a lift kit under it. Pretty rare for 1972, I'd think.

Pink Flamingos. Though, this comes with a NSFE (Not Safe For Eyes) warning. For a less traumatizing John Waters experience, I'd recommend Polyester, though it was set in 1980 or '81.

Not a film, and not filmed back then, but how about Fargo Season 2? To me it seems like it could be quite authentic would love to hear what those that knew that time and place think, in terms of the decor/cars/fashion etc...

Check out the short films of Les Blank. Shot mostly in the rural south, they are great snapshots of 70' life. There's a set of them on Criterion, and youtube has trailers.

I was 16 the first time I saw Pink Flamingos. I'm not sure that I've ever laughed harder at a movie since then.
