Which is like a little girl saying “I got three plastics for Christmas” to describe receiving three Barbie dolls for Christmas.

onlyacanvasky Your guess is as good as mine.

Yeah I still call 7"s "45s" and the brittle ones "78s", even though there's plenty of 33s in with the 45s and some 70s, 80s and 90s (and even 33s!) in with the 78s.

"Shellac" is no good for those either, cause there's plenty of vinyl ones in there too.

In both the U.K. and America, no one says “raincoats are made of vinyls.” One says “raincoats are made of vinyl.” No one says “she wore vinyls boots.” One says “she wore vinyl boots.” No one says “I covered my house with vinyls siding.”

Surprised to be getting this question, but OK: "count noun".

You really like these silly hypothetical examples, don't you? ;) No, I would not say that. And?

Have you ever actually heard a person say that? "Vinyls" is in use. Its legitimacy is not in question. I just wanted to know the history.

My father called his rubber overshoes "rubbers," which always got a laugh at home. But I have a colleague in his 60s who still uses that term. (Also gets a laugh.)

I'm amazed that grammar is more polarizing, here, than Slade.

I understand that language changes over time and that slang words and ungrammatical constructions regularly enter everyday speech. That doesn’t mean one has to accept a stupid and nonsensical neologism such as “vinyls” to signify multiple vinyl records.

Acceptance is personal. But the world moves on.

There are multiple internets, though. And, I'm told, multiple universes :)

It's okay... at least the younger generation is listening to LP's.

Maybe we can cut a deal with millennials that goes something like this:

"You create a new method of music playback and give it a name, any name, and we'll all go along with that. Meanwhile, were going to all go back to calling them records and ditch the word vinyl other than when using it to describe what a record is made of. We're not going to play a 'vinyl', or buy a couple 'vinyls', were going to play or purchase records. Same with 'wax' which is even further removed from that circular object you gently drop a needle on. It is not 'wax'."

    Deal?

Likely a contraction of 'vinyl records' - - but having grown up with the original LP wave, yeah, this ticks me off every time I see or hear it.

“Vinyls” not only sounds dumb, but it’s grammatically and phonetically incorrect.

I call them records, even though that term is supposed to be used for any recorded data. Records, eight-tracks, tapes and CDs.

The proper name/term, to me, is “vinyl record”. Or, to be more specific, “vinyl LP”.

And then moves on again. I don’t hear many people using “groovy” or “splitsville” anymore. “Vinyls” too shall pass.
