Language question: Why has "vinyls" become a word?

As will everything.

 

Heavy.

 

The only time I really use the term vinyl is if I'm referring to coloured vinyl, otherwise it's records. As for evolution of language the phrase I hate most from recent years is.."It's a big ask."

 

What do you mean by that?

 

Personally I have always just said records rather than vinyl, but vinyl or vinyls does not really bother me either.
But "needledrop" really annoys me. It sounds like you have damaged your stylus and does not even describe that act it is used for.

I know change is scary for some but this is a trivial change to a word, and that happens all the time.

 

Vinyls most likely came about because the plural of CD is CDs.

 

Isn't language fun?

 

“Vinyls” is akin to someone calling his CD collection “my polycarbonates.”

 

That's the worst part of all of this!

I sometimes think that the most offensive part of "vinyls" for many is that it reminds people that the old LP format is now marginally popular again. That wasn't supposed to happen!

 

If CDs had remained in vogue, and this particular material had grown over the years to acquire a relevance as opposed to some other material, who knows then if "my PCs" wouldn't have caught on with the users/fans?...

 

I ran into something even weirder than vinyl.

I was researching some classical music for some songs I was recording in a large library (which will remain nameless.) I asked a passing 20 something librarian where I might find them. She told me that classical music is now in the "Serious Music" section.

Hmmm - that might be an OK term to include classical, but - after trying to play them, I can name a number of hard core rock songs that are pretty serious, too.

^I think it's just an old expression. In his time, Frank Zappa referred to it a lot to criticize it.

 

Why do people keep weighing in on the use of the word “vinyl?” That’s not the topic.

 

Honestly I think there's a difference there. A turntable is just the platter, tonearm and plinth by itself, you plug the RCA cables into an amp and listen that way. When I think of a record player I imagine an all in one like a crosley suitcase player or one of those big "portable" stereos from the 60s.

There are too many people getting analytical over my snark. I too call my record playing devices "turntables". Well, except for the Victrola, Diamond Disc Player and American Standard.

 

My Dad use to call them "rackets" because of the "racket" those Beates made while we played their records.

 

One letter may seem trivial to you, but as it completely changes the intended meaning into something completely nonsensical, it's not so trivial, IMO.

 

This is why I started referring to all music as "albums."

 

People are not miscommunicating (as in risking being misunderstood) by using the currently trendy form "vinyls"

 

In general, altering language and using slang does cause miscommunication.

 

The rot set in when LPs started to be known as albums.

 

It's annoying, but like many annoying things it's not worth getting angry about. It's sounds like something people wear when they go to S&M clubs.
