I've been listening to the HBO Chernobyl soundtrack and am looking for music in a similar vein.

    Thanks

The start of industrial ambient. But hey, some people don't want to drink from the tap.

CTI (Which is an offshoot of Chris & Cosey) is very good. Look for the album CORE whis is a collaboration with them COIL, Monte Cazzaza, Lustmord, and Boyd Rice. Actually, any of the albums by the other people on this album would most likely suit you as well.

I also think the Throbbing Gristle album 20 Jazz Funk Greats might also be up this alley.

Maybe also check out Bass Communion, Steven Wilson's ambient side project. I'm not a big fan of this aspect of his career, but some people love it.

I often find that recent Swans meets much of the criteria for ambient and with a decidedly industrial palette, esp. the Glowing Man album; however, I'd guess that a general level of compositional and rhythmic organization would at the least preclude technical qualification.

Having done a bit of relistening in a search of an example since ending the first sentence, I now suspect that suggesting Swans is like a Deadhead telling the Coltrane Aficionado Society that they'd dig shows from '74: close, but likely no cookie. Still, there is some interesting cross-over for those who might at times jones for more tones in their drones.

That soundtrack was like prison bars and seemed to enforce my sense of obligatory commitment to watch the macabre events on screen despite a pervasive dread and persistent desire to walk away. Swans is ABBA compared to that.

Good call. I heard that last year but found the baby noises too disturbing having watched parts of the film.

Stars of the Lid - Per Aspera Ad Astra is good.

I don't think MMM goes anywhere IMO. Hear the first five seconds and you've heard it all.

Which can also be the complaint about a lot of ambient music. I find it hard to recommend ambient albums, as what one person loves, another finds boring or tedious. I couldn't even articulate why I listen to the albums I do, other than to say I enjoy it.

Here's one album that might be up your alley, but might not. The pseudo-premise is certainly good.

Space Is Hell, by The Soviet Space Programme

"Vostok Zero, the first human spaceflight, was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome in the Soviet Union on 1st April 1961, piloted by Colonel Ivan Ivanovich – a cosmonaut whose name has been entirely expurgated from even the most restricted secret records of the Soviet Space Programme. During the launch, the Vostok-K carrier rocket, which had only ever been intended to place the spacecraft into Earth orbit, catastrophically malfunctioned, and instead sent Ivanovich hurtling off on a trajectory which would eventually carry him far beyond our solar system, into deep space, with no hope of return. The very existence of the ill-fated flight of the first man in space has of course never been officially acknowledged by either the Soviet or Russian authorities – and yet these remarkable recordings of Ivanovich's final transmission, received just before radio contact with Vostok Zero was lost forever, stand as testament to his untold story."

That's quite the description and sums it up very well. It is NOT for the faint-of-heart but fits the bill if you can handle it. ;o)

  21. Not if you want “ambient”. Maybe Journey Through a Body, In The Shadow of The Sun, or side 2 of Second Annual Report.

Of course, the OP isn’t real helpful to those of us who haven’t watched the show in question.

In case it wasn't clear, my mention of MMM was a pisstake. It's just that the album title seems to say it's what the OP wanted.
