A young friend of mine uttered the word "vinyls" at a now defunct message board and was roundly chastised by several older posters.

I have no problem with this word, except that I tend to get the i and the y mixed up. :D

If people can get away with “maths” then I can get away with “vinyls.”

They shouldn't be. Nor should you.

  6. My old Webster's (1981) says it's chiefly a British form. Common in French too, though we don't pronounce the plural "s".

I've always assumed "vinyls" is slang, like saying something is dope or the bomb of whatever. Nothing says, "you're old and out if touch" like pondering why the younger generation uses particular words or slang.

If people want to say "vinyls," fine. We've got far bigger things to worry about these days

It "literally" is. Singular or plural, to discuss the use of "vinyl" as a synonym for "record" or "LP" was the reason I started this very thread.

Not if you believe you are speaking to peers who use the same code.

    True.

I remember many years ago when there was a push my a gort to use standardized writing and words and to avoid using slang. It was ignored, as this is an informal setting. I can't think of any setting aside from business and government that isn't informal.

There are people who say that now. I guess it doesn't matter anymore. Society is all shot to hell anyway.

It's not only in the vernacular but I see a lot of shoddy grammar and lack of proof reading in journalistic writing as well.

Back in the day I never heard “vinyl” used it was always albums / records!

    Isn’t “vinyl” more recent nomenclature!

Probably since the advent of CDs to distinguish between playback mediums. "Albums" is more ambiguous.

    That's proofreading.

Jimmy Mac Zooropa... better by design

Because we got lax, and to point out the mistake makes you a higher than mighty grammar Nazi. So now we are stuck with “prolly” instead of probably and people are now physically standing “on line” instead of in line nowadays. It’s sad when you really think about it.

These damn kids today! Why can't they speak English and use words like groovy, call cops pigs and buy their reefer by the lid?

Saying vinyls? That's just square, man. It's cool, though. I'll keep on truckin regardless.
