Metallica after Cliff died (yes, Justice is quite good, but nowhere near the caliber of Master and Ride, and the Black Album, although a massive hit, was a radical change in direction toward a more mainstream sound) and again after Jason was fired.

Van Hagar, after DLR's departure. Drop off is artistic IMO, they certainly maintained their commercial success.

Each to their own; I thought Reverberation was a step up from the grey album.

it was an ok album, it just didn't sound right calling it echo and the bunnymen
    without ian mccullochs voice.

Newsboys has a few instances of this:
In my opinion, they were at their peak in 1996 with the Take Me to Your Leader album, which included Peter Furler, John James, Phil Joel, Duncan Phillips, Jeff Frankenstein and Jody Davis.

When John James left, there was a slight drop.
When Jody Davis left, there was another drop.
When Phil Joel left, yet another drop.
But when founder/vocalist/primary songwriter/producer Peter Furler left, that was the biggest drop for the group.

Queen has produced precious little new work since Freddie Mercury died, but they're rolling in the $$$$$$$$$$

James Gang after Joe Walsh left.

And I say that being a huge Tommy Bolin fan. Bang and Miami had their moments but not the consistency they had with Joe. It completely changed their sound. He was more than guitar and voice, he was their main songwriter.

This very much so. What a massive loss.

I’d also mention Fast Eddie Clarke. I love Motörhead beginning to end, but it suffered when he left.
The Who when Moon passed away.
I guess this is extreme, but when Alice Cooper went on his own. I love the guy, but man that band was something.

The Black Crowes were great from when Marc Ford joined as lead guitarist in 1992 (three studio albums, several tours) until he was fired in 1997 (and original bass player Johnny Colt quit), then pretty bad until he rejoined in 2005; unfortunately, he quit the following year before they could make another album.

Topper was a mess, getting fired probably saved his life.

Yeah, Gottle O' Geer is a strange one for sure. Still quite like it though. However, I'm still surprised that the lovely Rising For The Moon didn't send Fairport stratospheric.

Too different for their fans at the time, I suppose, and possibly not enough time for the record company to build support around the new sound before the band imploded.

The quality of the Stones’ work was already in decline before Taylor left.

Guns & Roses after Steven Adler was fired. I know he was a mess and needed to clean up, but despite not being technically great he had a swing that was really missed. Sorum was much better technically but had no swing at all.
