They made two wonderful records without him. They have a very strong catalogue regardless of line-up. Hell's Ditch is the only one which doesn't hit 5/5 for me and even that is decent enough.

No. They were a three-piece on that record.

And to my mind, Bob's contribution to Tim was pretty negligible.

Still, he was a big part of their live greatness during the Tim period, as the Live at Maxwell's release demonstrates.

I'll take it a step further and say Maiden after Adrian Smith left the band.

ahh, yes. Losing Hackett was a major blow. I was a big Genesis fan at the time. I remember bringing "And Then There Were Three" home and listening to it and just being crushed. It was nowhere near as good as "Wind & Wuthering". In fact, I found it practically unlistenable. (Crazy to think it was their first platinum album in the USA!)

I did think "Duke" and "Abacab" were good though. Not great, but good.

They're gigging not producing new material. Plus I've not seen the Becker-less lineup, so I can't comment.

Only if you exclude Never Say Die. That dreck sabotages your argument. ( No pun intended)

Yes was never able to live down a Jon Anderson departure, either time it happened, IMO.

Correct, and I agree there's a distinction between touring bands down to 1 member and bands who still produce material.

I doubt the Becker-free Dan is all that different, as I don't think Becker was terribly prominent during the shows.

I saw the Dan a couple of times in 2006 and... 2008? and don't remember Becker doing much...

This is debatable. The Doors themselves were under the impression that Jim wasn't coming back from France and were recoring Other Voices while he was still alive.

Max Cavalera leaving Sepultura and starting Soulfly. Replaced by Derrick Green.

Some Girls? Tattoo You? just as strong as the later Taylor years.

  16. On one level I'd agree, but Max's live performance seems to have gone downhill over the years, whereas Sepultura still deliver the goods on stage. Also, Max's final contribution to the band creatively was the godawful nu-metal album that was Roots, where Sepultura copied Korn and went from leaders to followers overnight. At least the Green era has produced stuff that is mostly listenable (if not as good as the 87-94 period).

  17. This. Paul Rodgers also didn't try and copy Mercury, Lambert does and it's just ....no. You simply cannot try and replace Mercury, and I sometimes feel that's what May and Taylor are almost trying to do. There's no credibility in the current set up at all, really.

I can't remember when I saw them, just that Michael McDonald opened and did his vocals with them.

Stronger! "GHS" and "IORR" are really lackluster albums.

"Black and Blue" is a step in the right direction - it's erratic but an improvement over the prior 2 albums. "Some Girls" is a major comeback.

IMO, the Taylor years get overrated due to the greatness of "SF" and "Exile".

Taylor was on two great albums and two mediocre ones.

And the greatness of the two great albums wasn't really due to him anyway!

There was a big dropoff after Peter Tork left the Monkees, even if his contributions began to be marginalized on The Birds and The Bees and The Monkees. Of course there was an even bigger dropoff after Nez left prior to Changes.

I saw that "double headliner" tour in 2006. I'm sure MM has guested with the Dan other times, but that's when I was able to go! :)
