Oops. You're right. I mis-remembered the turn of events.

That said, James was a jerk about Jason wanting to play in Echobrain.

    He really was.

I always felt kind of bad for Jason because even though he was there during Metallica’s biggest period, he was never really allowed to forge his own path in the band, and the band ultimately suffered for it.

they're not strong albums. but i wouldn't go so far as to say there's nothing likeable on them.

Up is a top 5 REM record to me, but they did dip a bit after that, so I’m not sure if I’d include Berry in this or not. I always wondered if any of the songs on that album were kicking around when he was still in the band. Or if they really did all come up after he left.

I'm actually offended that the Eagles continue without Glenn Frey.

In retrospect that Wilco documentary was a real sleazy hit job on Bennett. I met him on his first solo tour and I definitely had the sense that the film hurt him more than losing the gig. Wilco has been utterly directionless after they couldn’t get that YHF feeling back.

Me too and this is coming from someone who thinks these reunion tours are pointless

Although he wasn't fired and did not quit, Brian Wilson removing himself from the touring Beach Boys was hard to take. But had he not done so we may have not have gotten his incredible music from 1965 and beyond.

Felt that way when Bernie Leadon left..
Not quite offended, but the music and
    Their style changed.
    No country freshness.

As much as I love them, I have to say

YES, after Bill Bruford left the band with rock's greatest achievement

Nearly all of Pink Floyd’s success, and certainly their most iconic work, came post-Barrett...

They hazed him mercilessly through the Justice tour. I seem to recall hearing James admit, years after Jason left, that the band never really got over Cliff's death and directed all their emotions at Jason. There also was a sense of "you're not just gonna walk into this band. You've gotta earn it."

I may be misremembering specifics, but that was the gist of it. Says a lot about Jason's fortitude that he put up with it, by all appearances graciously.

I actually prefer a lot of their music after Furay. Timothy B’s departure was the drop off for me.

Brian May kind of famously doesn’t consider Freddie’s death to have meant they were no longer Queen.

They’ve been mentioned already, but the first band that springs to mind is Gin Blossoms.
Also, Haircut 100 and 10,000 Maniacs.

Journey was the first to come to mind for me. That they have somehow continued for so long with other singers is crazy.

As with Pink Floyd, you’re confusing commercial success with artistic importance (although “artistic importance” are two words I hesitate to use when describing the Eagles).

For me, like Boston, without their lead singers, they're a cover band. :hide:
