The 1969 Debut from CSN is in my top 10 albums ever so I am absolutely determined to get the best possible sounding version. I read all the archives but is there a clear winner here, the Atlantic Box Gold disc or the brand new 2006 remaster with bonus tracks. No offense to those that like it, but the orig Atlantic pre-remaster from the 80's/early 90's is not in contention for me at all, nor is vinyl.

Anyone have any atrong opinions either way? thanks

The gold CD is the same mastering as the early '90s remaster.

Why is the original CD not in contention?

Some people love the new issue, but I'm not sold on it. Dropouts where there weren't any before, a somewhat muted high end, and no "Come in my Kitchen" before 49 Bye Byes.

That said, I love the bonus version of Do For The Others.

Can a Gort please change the thread title to the King's English? I don't know what it means.

    Thanks.

I have the original W. German cd, the Gastwirt remaster, and the newest remaster with HDCD encoding. I like the HDCD, but it does sound a little sterile to me. I got the original recently and do really like it. Sorry, I do not have the Gold to compare to the HDCD . What are you looking for? The cleanest version possible (less hiss)?

So how many masterings are there? Is this list right?

    1. 80's Barry Diament Mastering
    2. Atlantic Gold CD
    3. Joe Gastwirt Remaster
    4. HDCD

FWIW, I have compared 2 & 3 and they were NOT digitally identical. The waveforms were very similar and the differences were not audible but they were not digitally identical.

BTW, I think Barry just posted in one of the threads that his transfer in the 80s was a flat transfer from the master tape...

I am looking for the closest realization of the master tape, with hiss etc that may be there.....I want it to sound real. that's all......I thought the orig was muddy

I don't understand - you want the the closest representation of the master tape, but you don't like Barry's CD which he just said is a flat transfer from the master tape?

Yeah. Get the original CD. Try and subtract 3 db at 3400 cycles on all songs (parametric EQ with average slope) and you'll have a better presentation (vocals will sound more lifelike). Can't change the "quality" of the original mix though; that's in stone. I'd love to remix that sucker but it's not possible. Try my little trick and the tonality will improve a bit.

What all of this has to do with their couch is still beyond me.

The Gastwirt remaster was HDCD as well as the newest one.

That made me laugh out loud, Steve. He meant to diffrentiate between the two albums titled CSN. The cover of their first album has all three sitting on a couch and has the songs Judy Blue Eyes, Helplessly Hoping, among others. The other album titled CSN has a sailboat on the cover. It has the songs Dark Star, Cathedral and Just A Song Before I Go.

The first one is typically referred to as the "couch" album and the latter is called the "sailboat" album here.

Never imagined I'd be explaining that to you...

I'm puzzled too. If you haven't actually heard the master tape for yourself, how would you know what is or isn't the closest representation? I still have the one mentioned in the above post but I only ever put the vinyl on when I want to hear it. I guess I just like to get up from my own couch to hear side two. :righton:

    absolutely not.

only the newest remaster with the bonus tracks is HDCD.

as for my preferences, the gold and the new one. i know the gold has the same remastering as the gastwirt, but it reall does sound a little 'warmer".

The original Atlantic CD, mastered by Barry Diament. The Gastwirt CD has noise reduction in some places (Marrakesh Express), and the newest remaster has many drop-outs (Wooden Ships) that are not on the original CD. Mastering-wise, the newest remaster is closer to the Diament than to the Gastwirt, but the Diament wins in all respects: Cleanest source, most natural mastering, no unnecessary processing.

Jeez.....why would they cut out "Come on in my Kitchen"? That's as bad as cutting out the cough on "In My Time Of Dying". I remember I like to died when I first heard that back in the day!

And how do we tell these one from the other? I think I have the original Diament CD; catalog number Atlantic 19117-2, no mention of remastering anywhere, label is not exactly a target but has the red/black outer ring that was part of many target designs. Also, it has that early CD disclaimer on the back that "Because of its high resolution, ... the Compact Disc can reveal limitations of the source tape." No mastering credit or copyright date anywhere.

What do I have here? The original Diament?

Does this mean the session multi's went up in smoke in the Atlantic warehouse fire? (amongst many others)
