Yeah, I would get burned out quite fast.

When I did the whole Europe 72 tour, it took me almost a whole year to get through all 22 shows. I had to space it out so that I wouldn’t burn out on the first set songs.

True, but he's not the main reason I say that...the band just crackles on the 67, but in 72 it feels kind of rote.

That's the problem with doing one of those binges - the first sets. Great songs, but over the course of a tour where they're being done somewhat similarly every night, it could get old in a hurry.

I'd like to see an RFK box set a la the recent Giants release.

It would be better with 80s shows where there's way more variety in the setlists, and more reason to listen to different versions of the songs.

    6/14/68!!

I still wonder if more of the soundboard tape exists beyond the Caution segment.

I believe the exact quote was, ““OK, who’s the ****ing Phish fan? That was too much.”

Derek told that story on the Marc Maron podcast a couple of years ago and I think it’s in someone’s book too. It was during the Herring/Trucks iteration of the ABB

These guys aren’t punk at all... lol reminds my of the first time I tried listening to the dead in the 80s during the metal years. I distinctly remember my first reaction was something like, “ugh what the hell is this country music stuff...this isn’t metal at ALL!”. Obviously I figured with the skulls and stuff they were totally metal.

I just looked all over for that Caution from 6-14-68...nothing listed in dbetree but three dodgy auds...then I realized it's on the Fillmore bonus disc, and I already have it! What a relief, this is killer...sounds good too.

Last time I listened to it was on the aud, not even realizing there is a sbd and I have it...

Do you mean the other nights at the felt forum? When I listened to those recently, I was definitely thought 12-5 was the best. I had a tape of set one since I taped it off the radio in 96 or so, and it's always been one of my favorite first sets ever, but I missed out on set two, which has been the revelation. The way they were playing, putting the country songs in the middle of space, I've come to believe that verseless Dark Star was the perfect execution of that. It's an atypical level of weirdness for that time.

Now listening to 1969-11-08, via Wise sbd as about 11 minutes of the first part of Dark Star is missing on Dick 16...what's up with that? Ah--my files are out of sequence, that's what's up! Drat.

Not likely, but good choice. The second set is a top five set of all-time, for me.

This entire write up is utterly delightful. And English wasn’t even his first language. His slightly mischievous yet fun personality shrines through much of his contributions to this thread.

Like I said - miss him. I wonder how his brother is doing these days?

I mean , this is great stuff:

Jerry playing here is teethering towards the edge. It is mildly gazing into that inner abyss, reflecting the chaos that is at the center of the soul of all men. We are being thrown thru time and space with him. The sounds would be frightening if they weren't so beautiful and soothing.

And then they other guys back down from dancing on the volcano's rim and lock into that mellower but still brisk groove again (with a mighty bum note from Phil, I might add). That doesn't stop Jer to keep a-noodlin' for a few more minutes tho, finding his own way back home to the fold following the flashing guiding lights laid down by his comrades.

I love this write-up from Burt, I quote it here that its slide into internet oblivion be postponed just a little longer, and so we all again remember Burt...

EDIT: @notesofachord --ha! Postponed for a few extra seconds, I guess.
