On That Metal Show, Geddy stated that maybe this is the "best Rush," but they were always going to evolve and move on with their sound regardless. We never got Moving Pictures II, so to speak. Personally, I had little clue about the band until this came out.
CD-two of the 6-CD box set NUCLEUS & IAN CARR Torrid Zone: Vertigo Recordings 1970-1975 [Cherry Red Records, 2019] tracks 1 ("Oasis"), 2 ("Ballad of Joe Pimp"), and 3 ("Easter 1916") are from the LP 'We'll Talk About It Later' orig. released as Vertigo-label 6360 027 in 1971; tracks 4 thru 9: ("Elements I & II", "Changing Times", "Bedrock Deadlock", "Spirit Level", "Torso", and "Snakehips' Dream", seq.) are from the LP 'Solar Plexus' (as Ian Carr with Nucleus) orig. rel. Vertigo-label 6360 039 in 1971. So far, my favourite CD reissue set for the year 2019.
I agree, Belew added a lot to live stage enhancements. King Crimson, Talking Heads and Stage-era Bowie all stand out as particularly great live documents: Absent Lovers, Stage and the TH's of which we speak are live favorites. I've seen Belew with The Bears, and King Crimson of which there are no words... just marvel and astonishment. Katy Lied was playing when I saw your post, easy to get on the Citizen Dan kick; with me it 'just happens' most times-a spontaneous musical combustion that is rarely planned. The Royal Scam is my top usually, but when I listen to Countdown... as I did the other night, it is nipping right at the heels of RS. The guitar omnipresence on both are glorious, low in the mix mostly but a heavenly slow sizzle. A nod to Nightfly too, the best Dan we never got of the 80's, and better than Gaucho for me. Countdown is getting a reprise, thanks to you... and there goes Nightfly... what the...
So you say there's a race Of men in the trees You're for tough legislation Thanks for calling I wait all night for calls like these
It seems not so long ago (though it was!) that those out-of-print Nucleus vinyl LPs went for hundreds of dollars at record collector's fairs ~ and THAT was provided the other sellers setting up tables didn't first snap them up before the doors to the convention even opened to the general public ! Cherry Red has been reissuing a lot of previously very scarce material on CD these last several years. Its definitely worthwhile subscribing to their news feed
Fantastic A and B sides! John Phillips was a brilliant pop writer. And this band could sing like no one else.
This youtube station is pretty cool. Yeah it's vinyl rips playing but these mono mixes are just fantastic and is not always available elesewhere.
Original ABC Dunhill Records #4138 Debut 7/13/1968 Peaked at # 2 for 3 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart This is the super hot powerful mono mix that just blows away the weak wimpy sounding common stereo mix with the Hammond Organ on only one channel. ABC Dunhill records destroyed both the original multitrack master tapes and the mono mixes in the early 70's to save space. This left only the stereo mix remaining. Therefore, the only way to really hear this superior mix is from the original mono 45 RPM vinyl record. This is also the edited short version that was originally played on the radio when this was a hit record. The longer stereo version commonly heard today is from the LP. This is the original mono mix as heard when this was a huge hit on AM Top 40 radio on stations like WABC New York.
Need to check this one out -- while I was doing a quick search, the below popped up. A nice interview with Braxton about this release -- from Rolling Stone of all places. Guess Nels recorded the above, right after sitting in with Lesh. Also Braxton's favorite restaurant is Red Lobster... Avant-Garde Legend Anthony Braxton on His ‘Trans-Idiomatic’ Improv Odyssey
Here we go again. Here Mr. Polyester Pants himself, David Lindley, plays something familiar. That's an 11-string fretless oud.
The Broncos may very well destroy the Raiders. I would prefer to see otherwise, but I ain't holding my breath...
