First listen to new arrival, "In Vergessenen Tonen" performed by Sabine Lutzenberger (voice) and Norbert Rodenkirchen (medieval transverse flutes, harp) on Raum Klang. Die Sangspruche Meister Frauenlobs
I agree. I especially love his song cycles like Silesian Triptych, Paroles tissées, and Les Espaces du sommeil. Other favorite works: the Piano Concerto, Cello Concerto, Musique funèbre, Jeux vénitiens, Little Suite, Concerto for Orchestra, and Chain I, II, & III. I can’t quite get into his symphonies, but I believe Symphony No. 3 to be his best one.
I own all of the original issues of this set and there’s a good bit of music that I don’t care for, but I find his piano music, works for winds, and SQs in this series indispensable. My favorite Ligeti work of all, though, is Lontano. What a glorious piece of music this is!
Nielsen is one of my favorites, but I don’t think Esa-Pekka Salonen quite gets his music the way he does Stravinsky or Debussy for example. For Nielsen, I seem to always return to Bernstein, Gilbert, and Blomstedt. Sakari Oramo also has a fantastic cycle on BIS, which I highly recommend.
Listening to CDs 3 & 1 from "Shostakovich - The Preludes & Fugues" performed by Alexander Melnikov on Harmonia Mundi. CD 3 - No. 24 only. (disc serves double duty with DVD on the flip side) CD 1 - Nos. 1-12
The Salonen's cycle was the first Nielsen cycle I bought. I also have two cycles by Blomstedt, one each by Schonwandt and Colin Davis plus a few CD singles ...
Mine is labeled "Side 3 - this side up" so I put it in the tray with the side facing up and it didn't play. I flipped it over and it played. Try it and maybe you'll have similar results. Good luck.
If Salonen’s would’ve been my first, I would be hesitant to buy another Nielsen cycle. Thank goodness that Blomstedt’s on Decca was first exposure to this Nordic genius.
Yes. Harmonia Mundi also did this for the Beethoven Violin Sonata cycle by Isabelle Faust with Melnikov. It’s basically a double-sided disc, a CD layer on one side, a DVD layer on the other. Works fine, you just have to make sure you insert it the right way round.
Did the Beethoven Violin Sonata cycle by Isabelle Faust with Melnikov actually come with a two-sided CD/DVD hybrid? I have the box but never watched the DVD if it is even included in my box?
I tried flipping it and playing it on my computer and the DVD side played fine. The duo CD/DVD is much thicker than a normal CD so I flipped it to the CD side and really pressed it onto the spindle and it worked! I think it just wasn't properly clicked last time I tried it.
There seems to have been a version which did include a non-dual CD as the fourth disc. Maybe you only have this one? Beethoven* - Isabelle Faust, Alexander Melnikov - Complete Sonatas For Violin And Piano It’s easy to check whether you have the dual disc, since that one doesn’t have text on either side. There is only small text on the disc’s hub.
What did you think of the recording quality on this album? To me it is quite unusual, I have never heard any other piano recording sound like that- it is both reverberant and blurred, but not in the typical way; there is almost an "electronic" element to the sound of it like it was a cross between an electronic piano and a Steinway. That description isn't entirely accurate either, but I'm not sure how else to describe it.
Listening to CD 38 from "Leonard Bernstein - The Symphony Edition" on Sony. Mendelssohn - Symphony No. 4 "Italian" / Symphony No. 5 "Reformation"
This will probably interest Academy of St. Martin in the Fields fans: a 60CD ASMF 60th Anniversay box is scheduled for release in November. Amazon ASIN: B07XGSC351
