I never knew that Rega even made a DAC.

I think Hegel also shut down DAC models and just list one very expensive today. Maybe competition on that price point is difficult today.

    Well, it’s out.

    From Twitter:
@achilds1979 Hi. The product is no longer available and has been discontinued. This is why it has been removed from the website. Thanks.

I was also of the opinion that was a good dac, especially at that price... I am surprised to see it discontinued without any dac currently being offered by Rega.

    Catcher10 I like records, and Prog...duh

I'm not surprised......there are DACs galore on the marketplace now and most are DSD/MQA/Streaming capable and Rega would have to revamp the DAC-R to include all the new features. If you simply want a 24bit DAC without the DSD ability, then I think the DAC-R was/is expensive considering what is available now.

...or be great sounding bare bones units like the Border Patrol or Audio Note DAC's.

I owned the Rega DAC and found it quite unexceptional. Unless the DAC-R was a quantum leap forward I can't imagine many people were choosing them over the competition.

Well I've just bought one and was kicking myself, as I presumed dealers would be selling it off with a new DAC coming.

If a new model isn't on it's way, it at least makes me feel better.

They're still out there and I can testify it's fantastic and in hi-fi terms a bargain.

The Rega cognescenti on the forum are staying very quiet on this thread so it'll be interesting to see what happens.

Do people think of DACs when they think of Rega? I don't. I think of turntables.

Ill take Audio Note, MHDT labs etc any day for a DAC

Great amps and turntables don't get me wrong!

So what are the odds of Rega updating this?

    about 50/50... :wiggle:

Seriously, they don't tell anything about types or dates of new products as their usual way of release is a sort of surprize party. When something has been decided upon and on its way, then they will tell distributors and a few UK dealers. I have speculated with a customer or two about the DAC or future of Rega digital products but without any info from Rega, it's just that, speculation.

Maybe they will put a dac in their new Elicit instead...

It would seem like a weird thing to leave out of the line, given the importance of standalone DAC's to your modern, average hi-fi rig. Would you really want Rega speakers, a Rega turntable, Rega amplifier and Rega phono pre and not have a Rega digital, non-optical front-end?

I'd be super interested in a half-width Apollo with a fully featured, modern digital USB input.

I would guess that the future of traditional DACs is as built ins to integrated and all-in-ones. Stand alone DACs will be very technical, ladder (resistor) DACs with lots of proprietary technology. For stand alone DACs either go big or get out.

It seems like a nos R2R multibit dac would be a Rega thing, but I don't know if they could make one at similar price as the outgoing Rega Dac R...

  20. No replacement announced so far. The Saturn and Isis disc players have SAC functionality, although they are getting a bit long in the tooth.

Isis can only be used as a DAC with a PC or a MAC. Can’t connect a streamer to it...

If you can connect a computer to it you can connect a streamer to it.
