So this is NOT about frontmen who where good at audience participation during a song but those who had great skill with inbetween song banter?
I personally would discount singers like Bono with his political waffling that nobody would want to listen to at a fun concert.

Stuart Murdoch of Belle & Sebastian has excellent stage banter/audience participation.

It probably helps that the audience are generally bunch of fey indie kids, but still.

Bruce Springsteen for sure. From the stories he would tell on stage in the early days to the crowd surfing in the latter period. The Boss knows how to make a concert a communal event.

Gord Downie of The Tragically Hip.

David Lee Roth although he usually did the same stuff in every town. To his credit DLR evolved from the guy who bragged he was going to sleep with your girlfriend to on the last VH tour boasting he had slept with your Mom.

Springsteen was the best. His ability to weave those epic origin tales and slice-of-life stories into and between songs made his shows legendary and displayed a charisma that--as much as the music--helped create that amazingly devoted fan base of his.

Tom Waits also has the ability to be as entertaining with his stories as his music:

A lot of good ones mentioned. These days the tip o' the hat has to go with Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth for me. He's hilarious...great timing and dry wit, you can tell he loves messing around with the crowd. Their music is so serious and heavy it's wild to have such a lighthearted vibe in between songs. Here's 5 minutes of great banter. :p

    J. Mascis and Jay Farrar.

Just kidding. My pick is Robert Pollard. Billie Joe Armstrong was also great at this back when Green Day was just a scrappy young punk band playing in tiny clubs.
