A couple of questions from someone who hasn't delved much into Prince boots:

    - Is the live Detroit show coming from multi-tracks? I'd love to hear some high-quality live Prince from this era, but I'm wondering how much was recorded professionally in those years. It's too bad that the audio from the Syracuse 1985 video in the Purple Rain deluxe issue wasn't remixed, as I think it was originally reported that it would be.

-I presume the audio on the Houston show will be mono, like it was when Springsteen released a video from The Summit.

    - I've read that a couple of songs, "Raspberry Beret" and "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" originate from 1982. Do early versions of those songs exist? And if so, would they be saved for deluxe versions of the albums they ended up on or should they have been on this release?

I'm definitely looking forward to this!

Since his death both Warners and Sony have been guilty of putting a premium tax on his re-releases. Pretty despicable really for the fans.

No, to be fair that is correct, although wasn't the man himself involved with this reissue for quite a while.

...if they pressed this deluxe vinyl set on PURPLE vinyl, then they could charge another £10 per disc. That's what Sony are doing right now

I don't get why butchered edits are so sought after.

They are as valid as the edits of full recordings placed on the albums because of vinyl time limitations. It has been said that all the 12" "extended" versions of Prince recordings are the true original conceptions of the songs. 1999 is merely the album where he used those long versions on the album.
The single edits are valuable because of history. All official edits and mixes should be included in sets of this nature.
Also, some of us actually like to have the hit versions of the songs that most people remember, alongside the albums. And some of us might see the 7" format to be an equal artistic statement, as Prince himself did. He utilized the album, 7" and 12" formats brilliantly.

I'm not sure that's accurate in regards to the 12-inch mixes. My understanding is that some of them, at least in terms of the 1983-84 material, were put together after the album mixes were done & mastered (and even released). He would go back into the studio with the tapes and have an engineer create loops and extended vamps so they could make the extended dancefloor 12-inch versions. I guess that varies from song to song, but some of them were self-consciously extended for nightclub purposes after the fact.

I'm sure that's accurate in some cases, but I was surprised in Duane Tudahl's book on the Purple Rain-era studio sessions to see that 12-inch versions were very often created after the fact. I don't have the book with me, but there are cases where he's going back into the studio to create 12-inch mixes for the 1999 material well into 1983, basically concurrent with the beginning of the sessions for the Purple Rain era.

yeah, I get it, I just wish the 12" and B-sides were separate from the repetitive nature of the single edits.
