Chuck Connors as the Rifleman. Connors had a leg up with a 1/2 hr show (most of the westerns of that era often seemed to stretch half-hour scripts to fit 60 minute slots), relatively good writers and cast, and an interesting premise (a family-friendly Wm Munny).
Gabby Hayes and Robert Duvall came to mind originally, but Gabby was a western host on his show, and Lonesome Dove may be outside the era you're focusing on.

That's funny I was gonna say James Garner also.
They created a great character in Maverick - a lovable con who did his best to avoid conflicts and gunfights, and Garner played him perfectly. :righton:

I never watched TV westerns, only films. My favorite star was Clint Eastwood.

Richard Long and Lee Majors in The Big Valley.
And another nod to Chuck Connors but for Branded this time.
For me it was all about the hats, who had the coolest, so Doug McClure in the Virginian also rates highly.

Ditto! He's the first one I ever took a liking to (because of how good Have Gun, Will Travel was; good enough for me to have the whole series now).

Aside from Bonanza and Kung Fu reruns I don’t recall any TV westerns. I am referring to 70’s television.

I liked "Laramie", especially when "December Bride's" Spring Byington joined the cast.... So I guess my favorite TV-western star is Spring Byington... I also really liked the "Laramie" theme song....

Let’s not forget the granddaddy of them all
    The Lone Ranger(1949/1957).
    What a stirring theme tune.

Apart from Kung Fu ..tv westerns died out in the seventies.
Centennial(1978/79) miniseries is excellent. Though I only seen it a few years ago ( DVD). Missed out on TV from 1977- till 1982.
