Who will be the Louis Armstrong of Burns Country doc? (40% of the focus)

    Hank Williams, Johnny Cash?

What will the short changed era be?
(Thinks 60s bebop through present jazz (unless you name is Wynton) being ignored)

Late 60s Byrds/Graham Parsons? (At the expense of the Eagles
    Lucinda Williams/Wilco/Son Volt
    Yoakum/brooks/
Pop crossover mega stars like Carrie Underwood, trish, faith hill?

Fair enough, you’re right. But, man, he’s great...IMO, of course.

Since the cutoff date for the arc of the show is the early '90s, you can count on Carrie and Wilco getting short shrift, yes.

Who are the more "familiar people" you were hoping to have included from the 1920s?

Ugh. I forgot that this ran every night. I thought episode 2 would be on this coming Sunday.

I’ll DVR the 10 PM showing, and watch it a day behind.

What, you didn't know Jimmie Rodgers was dead?

    Since 1933?

The doc ends around 1996. The year Bill Monroe passed away. I have a feeling he will be a major figure through the next few episodes and may be considered the Armstrong of the series.

I'm not even much of a country music fan, but I'm a Ken Burns fan and a musician.
So far, it's well-done (no surprise there). Say what you want about Ken Burns, but if you watch any of his documentaries in their entirety, and pay attention, you will have absorbed virtually a Master's Degree's worth of material.

The footage of Louis Armstrong playing with Jimmie Rodgers was outstanding!

That guy from Old Crow Medicine Show is real good in the first episode.
I read a review somewhere that was declaring that Marty Stuart is this docs Shelby Foote.
The reviewer also said it was kind of sad how much is dedicated to a certain huge pop country star of recent decades. Initials G B.

As long as the last episode discusses the impact of Chris Gaines on the music world,
I won't care if they leave out Hank Williams!

Hearing Bill Monroe tonight was the first the music sounded "contemporary" to me instead of old timey. Bob Willis, as well, with the soloing and the swing, but Monroe really brought old time music forward.

Interesting that they spent almost an hour talking about the Banjo and Fiddle and
neither Jimmie Rogers nor the Carter Family featured those instruments.
But I enjoyed the first installment.

I understand your points and your good intentions, but we have to stop judging people of the past by the "enlightened" standards of our day. I'm sure there were some people who were uncomfortable with the idea of blackface and wouldn't have enjoyed it back in it's heyday. But I would wager that most--black and white--didn't give it a second's thought. There were people who were abolitionist who risked their lives to end the practice of slavery who sat down and enjoyed a minstrel show. Yes, it was racist , but the point I'm trying to make is that of all the terrible things slaves and newly freed blacks had to endure, minstrel shows were the LEAST of it.

Also, anyone who knows anything about Ken Burns and his work must also know that he isn't showing pictures of blackface performers gratuitously or for kicks.
    There's a point to it.
    It's HISTORY.

They are killing this show with the way it is being broadcast.

Four nights in a row...two hours apiece...and then three days later once again we go four days in a row, two hours each night! That's lunacy.

Let the episodes breathe. We could talk for a whole week just about that first episode alone. The documentary should have been spaced out far more liberally. Who the hell is going to watch such densely packed shows four nights in a row two hours a night? Nobody. We are going to DVR it and watch when we can. Might take me a whole month. That's not good for the community spirit this show should have engendered. Instead of many watching together...we are going to be doing it on our own. Hell, Monday Night Football drew me away tonight. That makes me already an episode behind.

I'm a cynic, but what they really want is for people to buy the DVDs and CDs.

One thing that is quite clear from episode one is that Jimmie Rodgers was a pop country star for his time and place. While I personally think the genre peaked with Loretta and Merle, bemoaning how country has gone pop on [insert your date it all went wrong here] is so tiresome.

Lest it be forgot, in the UK the BBC finally axed the Black & White Minstrel Show in 1978.

    Emmylou, Rondstadt, Dusty, Bobby Gentry...

Throw Lucinda Williams in for kicks
